My advice is to start small, focus on a niche you already know (cameras are my interest for example) and try to break even initially. Don't blow the whole budget on one campaign in an hour. Instead go slow, study your customers to improve their experience and conversion. Identify traffic sources which work well for each particular campaign and stop those that don't. Be the customer, understand what they want and carefully watch your competitors - offer more than they do. You need to keep everything granular, track everything, bucket test if you can, write down every change you make and revisit an analytics package to understand its impact on a regular basis.
