Adwords - Keyword Planner Forces Campaign Signup?

Within the last 2 weeks I was able to access the Google Keyword Planner tool and get stats for various keywords.

Today when I tried to use it, it forces me to sign up for a campaign, provide credit card info and so forth. Am I doing something wrong or has Google cut off general access to this tool?

The same thing happened to me. It used to be that you can use the keyword tool for free. I think because of Google introducing the Keyword planner tool, things changed a lot. I'm trying to figure it out too!

      Hi chrshea,

Use of the AdWords Keyword Planner Tool is still free to use, as always, however Google does now limit access to users with AdWords account access.

By the way, it does not cost any money to setup an AdWords account, just signup and get access.

Unlike before (where you could sign in with a GMAIL ID and PW and get access), they now seem to force you to go through the 4 step setup of an Adwords ad/campaign (About Your Business, Your Ad, Billing and Review). It's possible that I'm just going to the wrong place and if so maybe some can provide a link for just accessing the stats.

          Hi chrshea,

The only way to access the Keyword Planner now is through the Tools menu in your AdWords account.

It only takes a few minutes to setup an account and choose a campaign name and a name for your first ad group, especially if you just enter the default names. Once you have your campaign name and ad group name setup you should be able to access the menu in your AdWords account.

Obviously, Google provides the tool as a service for their AdWords advertising clients and apparently want to limit access to paying clients. Why not signup and become a paying client? AdWords is a very effective advertising platform and if you are doing marketing on Google Search, it makes sense to use it.
