    Normally if you are doing competitor keywords you start with 300 - 500 keywords and track them all. then you learn what keywords are converting and for similar keywords that convert well create an ad group. that way you will be optimising. in a perfect world you should be having 1 keyword one ad group but since that is not possible we lump similar keywords together.

    Then we can use dynamic texts on ad titles and all that to get some decent CTR to improve the cost.

    You will then end up with only converting keywords and converting ads. and that could be just 10 keywords that is giving you 80% of the success. the rest of the keywords you should then remove and concentrate on the high converting keywords.

    Mostly starters fail coz they expect immediate success which does not happen. Often the first campaign makes losses but its optimisation that the loosing campaign will make some decent profits. The other part which beginners dont do is to track and if you dont track it is impossible to make a PPC campaign profitable.

    Maybe you will not believe me but at the Moment I am using only 1 keyword that is giving me all the profit and traffic.

    So PPC is as easy or as difficult as that.

    1. Spend 80% of your time in doing proper research to understand your audience and derive the angles.
    2. Use the angles on Your Landing pages and related keywords to that.
    3. Track your Campaigns.
    4. Optimise split test.
    5. Scale.

      Hi Keerti,

      The number of keywords depends on your business niche. If you are providing service than usually you need less keywords, around 200, but if you are having some big webshop, than sky is the limit.

      Hi Keerti,

      You question is a bit like asking "how long is a piece of string".

      The answer depends on the circumstances.

      I suggest that you not trust anyone giving you a specific number, as that indicates they have no idea what they are talking about, in my opinion.

      The right answer, in my opinion, is determined by the nature and number of products/services you will be marketing as well as the budget that you have available to work with. If you have an eCommerce store with 30,000 SKUs you're obviously going to need a lot more keywords than someone in micro-niche with a single product of service.

      Budget permitting, you should identify and use all of the extremely relevant keywords that show high commercial intent, regardless of the number, provided there is sufficient search volume for those keywords. For some products/services it will be a small handful of keywords, while other products/services it could be many thousands of keywords.

      My advice it do not target a specific number range, instead target a specific relevancy range, regardless of the number of keywords found.

        2. Have at least 2 ad groups per campaign
        3. Have at least minimum 20 keywords per adgroup.

        Keep your keywords relevant to your ads and your keywords relevant to your ad group.

        Start small and expand. Otherwise you will lose a lot of money.

    What I heard is that you need to test more variable, but keep the variable as tight as possible.
    This applies on how many keyword should you use.

    1. Kws depend on your niche and the audience you want to target.
    2. Initially kws are kept in slight more numbers, but the daily budget is kept low so as to make an idea that which kws are actually getting business.
    3. Then slowly home on to business kws which you select after running your campaign after about 10 days, then you can slightly increase your budget.
    4. Now, start using exact match and negative kws to only target relevant traffic and totally avoid junk ones.
    5. These all tips will actually get you conversions and it will help you understand the audience and campaign better.

    I normally start with 1 or 2 keyword phrases and gradually build from there. I create one adgroup per keyword phrase which results in a high CTR and lower CPC. Never be afraid to bid high as Bing often charge you considerably less, sometimes even 1 cent clicks when you bid eg $0.40 or more.

    You might need to tighten your variable(keywords) as much as trouble with a tight budget, this could give you a clearer picture than having 300 to 500 keywords.
