Sometime I use there free tools.. Once A clients provided me their data after buying their paid packages.
Clients asked me to setup campaign with that data and I found that 80% of the data was useless & garbage.
They were not relevant to my clients business..

It may not be true with all type of business... Also I can not trust any such companies. Its not possible to know all keywords, negative keywords, bidding of any competitors.

    Just my thought.

Spyfu or for that matter, keywordspy and SEM Rush are not scams, but they are not highly effective either.

      Hi DURABLEOILCOM,

I have used Spyfu, and other similar tools for years. They do provide a little bit of insight into what your competitors are doing, but I should emphasize that it is just a hint, definitely not a complete and accurate picture. All of their data is extrapolated from a relatively small sample set, it is incomplete, and often highly inaccurate.

The data provided by such tools pales in comparison to what you can get from your own direct testing of keywords. "Seeing what are the most lucrative keywords from your competitors" is easily and more reliably achieved by using the AdWords Keyword Planner tool. Just look for keywords with relatively high avg, CPC, and high competition level, and you have that list.

What I find most useful from the data those tools provide are the ad text samples. It can give you a fair amount of insight into which value propositions your competitors are using in their ad text. You can get that data from the AdWords Ad Preview and Diagnostics tool, but using Spyfu, or similar tools, will be a bit faster. Finding a good value proposition that your competitors are not using effectively can be worth quite a lot if exploited properly.

  • I don't use any of these tools but I hesitate to call them scams. A scam is something that doesn't do as advertised or is meant to deceive. As with any tool, it's how you use it and the perceived value in it. If you use it wrong, there will be little value in it. Don brings a great point in using them to find out what competitors are NOT doing. I've never heard anyone using spy tools that way. Often, you must think outside the box and look at things from a different angle and that is a great example.

I use SpyFu everyday and can say it is not a scam at all. It brings a lot of useful information to one place. Like dburk stated, the ad copy of competitors is easy to find and sort to which ads have been the most successful and when the company stopped using the ad.

Finding backlink sources and profitable keywords is great too. I like the interface and how everything is in one place. It is definitely not a cure all, but is a great tool. Just don't expect to use it and throw away excel or other tools.

I hope this helped you some. Thanks!
