Question on UTM tracking parameter "content" for adwords

Hey guys,

I'm having some issues with the 'content' parameter and i wanted to see if anyone could share some insight.

I use the Google URL builder and include 'content' in the tracking.

To analyze the results I go to Google Analytics:

Acquisition > Campaigns > All Campaigns

Then for the primary dimension I select: other > acquisition > ad content

What comes up is the FIRST LINE of my ad, NOT the content tracking parameter I used.

Does anyone know why this is the case, and how I can show the correct reporting for the content parameter?

Thanks!

    Hi spock0149,

The AdWords auto tagging feature will automatically create tracking URLs for you simply by placing a checkmark in the Auto-tagging option in your AdWords settings. The benefits of auto-tagging are that it is done for you automatically and will provide rich data for your AdWords campaigns within Google Analytics. If you prefer to do this manually, you can disable auto-tagging and create all of your tags manually.

If you do decide to disable auto-tagging you should be aware that you may have less details about your AdWords campaigns in your reports. Fortunately, you do not need to disable auto-tagging if you simply wish to override the default settings you can enable the auto-tagging override option in the advanced property settings.

Thanks for the insight! I very much appreciate it.

My question is still open however, regarding why my UTM content tag is not showing up with the correct information. Any additional insights appreciated.

        Hi spock0149,

The most likely reason is that you have auto-tagging enabled in AdWords and have not enabled the auto tagging override option in Google Analytics. Google Analytics will not override the AdWords auto-tagging unless you explicitly allow it by enabling the auto tagging override option.

See my previous post for links that explain and instructions on how to enable the auto tagging override option.
