How do you manage small audience sizes with Facebook ads?

Using Google Analytics, I've been able to find out which demographic (age, gender, country) results in the most sales for my product. I've been driving traffic mainly through Facebook and LinkedIn groups.

I now want to scale things up with Facebook ads.

However, when I set my targeting for this specific demographic, the audience is only around 5,000, which is pretty small.

Is it possible to make things work long term with such a small audience size? I plan to create ads linking to content on my blog to get opt ins (and use retargeting for those that don't).

Any thoughts? Would creating a lookalike audience work to expand the audience size?

It just feels to me that once you've used a couple of ads with a small audience, it's tricky to keep things going due to ad blindness and frequency etc

As the audience become small, they will charge more for impressions. Second thing I don't understand is unless you are using your own custom audience like remarketing, the normal demographic filter won't shrink to that level on country bases. My suggestion is, optimise it a bit but don't reduce to that level. Facebook is best programmatic network. Allow it learn more about your relevant audience and it will automatically bring down your CPA.

A quick way to increase your audience size and stay targeted at the same time is to simply look for the "big dog" in your niche and use his audience list as well if related to your product or service.

This way your ads will be targeted and have a larger audience waiting already.
