Performance Max Campaign affecting previously high performing Smart Shopping Ads Campaign

I created a new Google Ads performance max campaign for all products for the e-commerce company I work for. The new Pmax campaign had been generating far less revenue than the old smart shopping campaign; so I switched back to the previously high performing Smart Shopping Ads campaign for all products (by pausing pmax). But, all on a sudden, the old Smart Shopping Ads campaign is also providing much less revenue at a pretty bad ROAS. Now, as Pmax campaign is currently performing better than the old campaign, I have to run pmax campaign.
Why the smart shopping ads campaign which had been performing very well almost every single day suddenly stopped performing? Is it because a new performnace max campaign was introduced? Optimising the pmax campaign further is my only way forward?
