What do you think? Are title tags a Google Ranking factor?

A new article on Search Engine Journal reports that there are persistent claims that title tags are a strongly weighted ranking factor. But are these claims overblown?

An association between page titles and Google search rankings exists as strongly today as in the early days of SEO. People of all levels of SEO knowledge agree that optimising page titles is vital to success in search.

So, how could you argue?

Page titles are the most visible component of Google's SERPs; it's easy to conclude they carry weight as a ranking factor.

But, here's the ting.

More optimisation is not necessarily better. Optimisation can cross the line into manipulation. That's when you're writing for search engines before actual people. Historically, Google devalues ranking factors when the level of manipulation reaches a pint where it's dragging down the quality of search results.

A prime example of this is domain names, which Google once valued so highly that it was difficult to rank without keywords in your URL. That's a thing of the past, and now it's equally possible to rank with an obscure brand name in your URL as it is with a keyword-based domain.

As Google search matures, it's logical to wonder if page titles may go in a similar direction. Will Google eventually get fed up with the spam and reduce the weight of the page title ranking factor? Who knows what's in store for the future, but we haven't reached that point yet. There's no question about Google's algorithms considering page titles.

Instead, the questions around page titles are:
  • The extent to which title tags are valued.
  • How much they matter to the bigger picture of a website's search optimization.

I'd like to hear your own answers to those questions. Hit me up!

Just remember the words "relevance is the key"it has a big factor that the title tags has a keywords on it, just make sure that the keywords you put on the title tags is also included on the content.

Title tags especially with kws on it has a impact to a rank that specific kws included in the title tag.

yes, meta tags (title n description) are a proven important factor to rank higher in google, other than the heading, etc.
the other day I just changed the h1 , and it pushed me to page 1.
I did other things too , to be on page optimzed, backlinks etc, but after that, the h1 thing did the job.

so in short, meta tag is important bro.

My experience says that in SEO relevancy is the key to everything. You are not paying for a keyword all you can do is add that keyword to your site; in your content and in the meta title and description and also use it in backlinks. Talking specifically about meta tags, YES it is important to have relevant keywords in the meta title and meta description and it is proven that this increases your website rankings.

It helps search algorithms understand what category the page fits into and which queries it may be able to answer. From there, Google uses more critical factors, such as the main content, to determine a page's ranking.

While it is still inconclusive, there is a correlation between the title tags of your website and its ranking in Google. This may be because titles are a quick way for Google to identify which websites should rank higher in search results. So, for your website to rank higher in search results, ensure your titles are catchy and accurately reflect what is on the page. Additionally, use only a few long or complicated titles that might confuse or alienate potential customers.
Google also ranks websites by their content quality, so ensure that your writing is good enough to compete with other high-quality websites. In addition, use keywords throughout your content so that it can be found by people searching for related information. Finally, ensure that all your links point back toward your leading site rather than Domain Subdomains or Blogs associated with your business.

Do you mean try not to confuse your potential customers at all? Or is it important to have at least a few long or complicated titles?

Title tags are a confirmed ranking factor. Google uses your title tag to get an idea of what's on your page and how relevant your content is to the user's search query. Title tags also tell browsers how to display your page's title in three key places: search results, browser tabs, and social media.

Yes. Titles play an important role in ranking factors but only if you use it correctly. Relevancy is key. You should use good keywords in it. And those keywords should also be in the content of the page. But in a semantic way

A title tag is an HTML element that designates the title of a page and is listed in the SERP. An effective title tag can strengthen keyword signals for your webpage. Ideally, the title tag should describe the page and utilize relevant keywords.

For me it's a big yes, i have seen it & experienced it many times. I just keep the title for a primary keyword, secondary keyword & Domain name, while keeping all the Headers relevant and highly optimized.

Relevancy for me means, that i have to use relevant page/product/service specific stuff on the page, for example, title, description, kws, headings, page copy image alts, etc., each & everything to be in a sequence and highly optimized.

A title with a primary keyword, then a second keyword while making a row with the same keyword in the URL with it, then an H1 tag make a very nice relevance & trigger ranking. The title tag is a good ranking factor & i have been using primary keywords, and secondary keywords in a row while keeping the primary keyword in url too, H1 tags & using it properly on page copy make it more likely to gain ranking.
