What Do Your Friends/Family Think Of Your Business?
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

I'm just curious to know how other peoples friends and family react when they explain their business. I have had a lot of co-workers, friends, and family ask about it, mainly due to the Eye Earn sticker on my truck.

I tell them exactly what I do, and many of them are very skeptical, especially when I tell them I'm only making around $20 a month. Try and explain that this is like any other business, it takes time, and many of them still won't get it.

The strange thing is how many people have no idea about affiliate marketing, or home businesses. The first thing I usually tell them is I'm not one of the people filling their junk email folders! As far as affiliate marketing, the nearest comparison I can make to get the idea across is Avon!

So, how do your friends and family react? Are they supportive, or not? Do they look at it as a scam, or do they see the real business side of it?

Comments like this are what I have got.
"When are you going to get a real job?"
"So you are one of those guys that fill up my e-mail box"
"You are being scammed."

If you always worry about what other people think you will never give yourself the space to have the success you desire. Most of the population are too scared or ignorant to even attempt to start their own business, so be proud of yourself for being bold and courageous

Hi Aaron,
At first my family and friend were very skeptical and tried to change my mind, they said i am throwing away money that I don't have, and this is a waste of time.

Since then, i got full support from my husband, and now he want me to invest more money in biz, because it saves time .

My brother make money from ebay and many friend are saying "I want that too" - non of them is serious about it, they just enjoy the thought about making money.

When I say it takes time, they say it a scam, but wish me luck anyway.

Some friends are telling me that I'm being scamed. Others don't even like to here about what I'm doing.

My Family (wife brother and Sisters) support me anyway but some of them tell me to get back to them when I'll be successful.

Anyway I've categorized my three sort of people for myself
1- Friends to share beer and Talk about wether...
2- Friends who can hear what I'm saying and sometime give positive advices. Not negative minded ones
3- My Braintrust of Likeminded Friends with them I can share my dreams and my plans. And always we try to help each other to come Forward.

To our Success Friends

You said it! Thanks for saving me the time. I call these 'dream stealers' - if they don't understand or have a clue, it is easier to claim some knowledge - 'it's a scam' -

...and then there is the unscientific logic where someone once got ripped off on the internet and therefore all things internet are a ripoff.

(I have been ripped off from television and phone WAY more than the internet). (that doesn't mean to turn off your TV and don't answer the phone, however). LOL.

Bottom line is plain old green devil jealousy. They are not motivated or creative and probably do little more at their J-O-B than take up a chair for 8 hours.

Having said that, they may be genuinely concerned (humor them).

Everything you all have said sounds very familiar!

Trust me, if I was losing faith in my business because of a few naysayers, I would have quit before I started! I too find that many of the people who dismiss what I do are those who dream of money, but would rather buy lottery tickets than do any sort of work for it.

I only mentioned this because my fiance is very skeptical of what I do. But now she wants to start her own business as a caterer, and wants me to design her website, etc.

My response was that if I support her (and I do, she's an amazing chef, and very capable in positions of power) then she has to support me. Haven't heard a word against it since LOL.

I have firm belief in what I'm doing, and I enjoy it. To me it's not just about making money. I have a very physically exhausting full time job, so it's nice to have something that can stretch the brain muscles too!

I don't discuss it with my friends and family, except my fiance who is supportive.

I've never been into warm marketing, and my friends/family would need some kind of proof to sway their skepticism, so I'm holding off on informing them til I see some money coming in cuz I'm not even making as mucha s you are. Once I start making enough to live on, I can tell my family and friends, and also give them advice to avoid the obstacles I have encountered.

For now though, I'm keeping it quiet and working on building up my own stuff. Maybe I'll even provide SEO services and other such things to them at no charge! That'd be an ENORMOUS help!

I won't tell anyone before my business is well estabilish and having regular income. I am sure they will be very skeptical since I was one of them for the last two years when I was looking for ways to work from home online.

However my wife is very supportive to what I am doing now....thanks God!
At least I have the very one that support me ever.

Hey Pat, I was going to quote but not sure with new Blackberry, but, all I do is take up and sit in my seat all dat LOL Its a job thing.

I don't really tell friends or family what I'm doing. If they see me working I'll tell them a little. If they're interested I tell them more and so on.

I've never believed in the "hot list" "warm market" "cold market" stuff. I've also never let anyones opinion sway my thoughts. Too many negative people to pay attention to. Istay positive and keep positive minded people around me.

Business is business and friends are friends. I like them that way.

Find out how this guy went from being over $40,000 in debt to having total financial freedom and how you can to.Click Here: Freedom ~

That's pretty much how I look at it. I don't try to sell to friends/family. If they ask, I tell. I'm not into pursuing my friends as customers, and if I was, it would be pointless, as my services are pointed more towards those who have already decided to start a business, but lack the budget.

I'd have a hard time convincing people to start a home business, just to use my services!

At the same time, if they ask, I have no problem sharing. You never know, one day someone one of your friends knows might need your services, and your name comes up. Word of mouth, in my opinion, is better than outright advertising any day!

I don't think they are taking serious of what I am doing, but anyway, they are my family and they give me enough support.

Hello:

Most don't understand it or don't want to understand it. Doesn't bother me because I am doing it because it's what I want to do and what I enjoy doing.

I spent years (decades!) doing what others wanted me to do and what I thought others wanted me to do. Then one day a few years ago I said, "Enough is enough. I'm going to do what I want to do," ... and I'm doing it!

Internet Marketing is like any other kind of business - it's all in the numbers and percentages. The more people you tell about it, the more you find who understand it and accept it.

All of my family and friends are very supportive. They admire me for building something for myself.
I spent so many years building other people’s businesses only to be laid off. Many of my friends fear the same and are looking for something themselves.
