Are Spammers Useful Afterall?

Hi Warriors,

Given that my website and blog is relatively new again as i just re-started IM a few months ago, and concentrated in the last few months on site content creation and on page SEO, while now starting to enhance my backlinks, undestandably, my PR is still zero.

What surprised me was that on accessing the comments moderation/pending page of my blog, the PR indicates 4.

I was pondering over the rationalization for this and thought this could be the effect of the handiwork of spammers who have been bombarding my blog with their "spurious" comments.

Could it be due to trackbacks and pingbacks from their sites as their direct comments on my site even if approved will constitute a backlink to them and not me?

Could this development be useful in pulling up the PR of other pages on my website since it is claimed that the PR of a homepage eventually rubs onto other pages of the website or is it of no consequence at all?

What do you think?

Dele,

I think what would concern me the most about these "spam" links is the relevancy to your website.

Backlinks are good, however, if all your backlinks are to viagra, free pharmacy drugs, sex sites etc... they aren't relevant to your home page or any other page on your domain.

So, in my opionion, be they PR4 or whatever, they aren't going to help your site, they are going to make your site irrelevant in the search engines eyes because they have absolutley nothing to do with Affiliate marketing and work at home business opportunities.

Personally, I remove these type of backlinks and comments as fast as they are inserted.

In a sense this would be like 'reverse marketing' where people use their spam as a source of leads and start marketing back at them.

These are die-hard marketers who get excited about 1 lead out of 10,000 bad addresses, no responses, etc.

I guess it depends how you want to look at it. For me, I wouldn't want to do business with spammers and miscreants who are harming this industry, clogging up the networks, triggering spam filters, causing disruption as do most trolls.

However with links it is as Allen says - it would seem to do nothing to help - not even to mention harm it might do...

(I remember the days when they told you to check all the sites of your linking partners to be sure you are not linking to porn, spam, or scam as that would be detrimental to your business (not sure how Google sees this now as I am sure they must realize how somethings we don't control/are out of control????)

I may not be the most successful marketer but I firmly believe, 'If you lie down with dogs, you get fleas".

(apologies to real dogs who I love dearly)

That is what i do too, but apparently the backlinks already created by them to my webpage(comments moderation) from their website remains despite this, hence the increased PR i guess.

Since their pending comments for moderation did not stay long enough on my webpage to get reckoning from google, hence my guess that the increased PR to the webpage must be from pingbacks and trackbacks which remains on their site despite my speedily disapproving their comments on my site.

Only glad that Google clearly says you are not liable for acts not directly committed by yourself.

Google does not penalize you for links pointing at your site, not created by you, even if spam but rather for links that your site point to, created by you, since this is within your control. If otherwise, then spammers and competitors would easily destroy most sites.

What again puzzles me is that shoudn't that have been taken into consideration within Google algorithm such that the PR effect on my comments moderation page should have been negative rather than this positive effect?
