Three friends went to a hotel. The bill was $75.00. Each friend contributed $25. The waiter took the bill and payment to the cashier. The cashier was happy & decided to give them a discount of $5 & asked the waiter to return to them with the $5 Now the waiter was confused. How to distribute $5 among 3 persons. He kept $2 in his pocket & gave one dollar to each one of the 3 persons. So initially each one had contributed $25. Now as they are given 1 dollar back, their contribution was reduced to $24. They all contributed $24 -- that is 24x3=72 & 2 dollars are in the waiters pocket. The total becomes 74. But they had paid $75. So where is the missing dollar? enjoy working this one out Graham |

Well, as a math dummy, I would say one of two things. Where does rupees come in here? is it some conversion issue as otherwise you are talking dollars?? OR the cashier took it? OR The dog ate it? p.s. I have another one for you. I have waffles and on the box it states that each waffle has 100 calories. However it states a serving of 2 waffles is 190 calories. I don't know the answer, but how do you save 10 calories by eating 2 waffles? Any idea? |

Hey, Graham: Should I say the answer? They didn't pay $75 - they paid $72 ... plus the waiter's "tip" of $2 equals $74. Clear as mud, right? Here is a question for YOU, Graham. What if they each gave their $1 back? That would be $72 plus $3 equals $75. Wait a minute! If you add the waiter's $2 tip, you know have $77!! Now we have $2 that has appeared out of nowhere! (He, he, he - figure THAT one out!) Pat: That's an easy one, too (since I am a frozen waffle-lover - just took my nightly 10:30 pm waffle break - really! I did and I do.) The 10-calorie difference is in the "serving." The waffles in the box are 100 calories. The served waffles are 95 calories each because they lose 5 calories when they are toasted. (This is the point where my wife usually gives me that look and says, "Do you KNOW that's how it is? Or are you making that up?" and all I can do is look innocent and smile.) GT |

Wow! That's good news, GT! Amazing! I would never have figured that out! Now the mystery is then who cares about the waffles @ 100 calories. Who is going to eat an untoasted waffle? Why bother - a useless statistic. Dang, even the waffle people are out to confuse me. In this case Vans healthy waffles. It's a conspiracy. Have you ever had chocolate chip waffles? Those are a chainstore brand (Safeway) - they are to die for at 110 calories EACH ... |

Second point: Now you've discovered my true weakness. Chocolate and waffles. I may have mentioned this in a post long ago, but what I do (almost every evening) is toast the waffles, then smear them with chocolate icing and top them with whip topping! I would agree with you on the chocolate chip waffles ... but ... they just don't have enough chocolate for me! By the way, Graham hasn't checked back in here, so I presume he's still trying to figure out how the waiter ended up with 2 extra dollars! (Truth is, that waiter needs to be watched!) GT

Oh your chocolate whipped cream waffle sounds fabulous! Great minds think alike - I would take chocolate frosting and whip cream and just mix it - forget putting it on anything! Problem is I would do it all day long so I can't have anything like that in the house. Don't know if you have ever tried the new Zone nutrition bars. They are double dark chocolate - and you get protein and vitamins with it, but you can hardly tell it is not just total decadence. I have one of those just about every day for lunch. Chocolate is actually very healthy (dark) and it is only the sugar that is a problem - not as much in dark or of course semi-sweet - some companies like Mars (Dove) have come up with a 63% cacao dark chocolate with only a few grams of sugar. yummy! bon ape'tite |

I kept the frosting (usually Duncan Hines or the store brand) in the fridge, so I'd have to nuke it a bit to soften it up before adding the whip cream. On occasion, I would add icecream, but I have a touch of lactose intolerance, so it never hurt my feelings if I didn't have any. By the way - Graham! - even though I think I figured out your teaser, every time I come back here I look at it again ... and each time, I get more confused about the answer. Thanks. Thanks a lot. :p GT

Riddles and waffles, I don't know if I have ever been more confused in my life. Graham should restart this post by saying the customers each paid with 25 waffles. |

Well the answer to the first problem is..... They actually paid $72. because they paid $70 to the cashier and $2 to the waitress. So multiply $24x3=$72. $70 of it paid for the meal $2 was a tip and they got $3 back. |
