Help with Wordpress Installation!
 

I tried to install WordPress on my website to start bloging, but, unfortunately it did not work.

I followed the tutorial, using Fantastico, on Hostgator step by step, but it was not fantastic. I tried it three times, still got either a blank screen or index/blog list when I clicked on 'visit site'.

I will be grateful for some help.

You can install wordpress stand alone not necessarily from the admin area of your hosting provider. If you need help on doing that let me know, it is a simple process that can be done in maximum 1h. Let me know if i can help you install wordpress on your domain.

You have to choose the right company for Wordpress.
Usually if the company is reliable, they do everything for their clients to make their life easier.

I use Hostgator for my web host as well, however, I NEVER use Fantastico. i install WordPress as a new installation on each blog I build.

Get the latest version of WP 3.0.1 here: WordPress › Download

The easiest way to install is:

1. Build a database inside your Cpanel
2. Download the latest WordPress from WordPress.org (Version 3.0.1) to your computer.
3. Unzip WP 3.0.1
4. Upload WP 3.0.1 with your FTP program to the domain or folder you want it in.
5. When upload completes... Type in the URL to your site into your search box, follow the WordPress set up.

Make sure you write down your database name and password as you will need these when you do the installation. Make sure that you use the full database name and user data. Should appear something like this (totally unique to your site).

sitename_databasename

sitename_username

You MUST have the information before and after the "underscore" _ for your database to function and to complete the set up of your blog.

Once this is done, upload the WP Theme to the Themes folder and upload the plug-ins to the plug in folder and you are about ready to go. Just activate theme, then activate and set up the plugins you are going to use.

Allen, I was wondering why you *never* use cPanel fantastico for your WP sites? I am not disputing you or anything, but my experience so far has been excellent, and want to know if there is something I am missing?

It's primarily a personal choice why I don't use Fantastico. I used to use Fantastico many years ago, but, I prefer a clean install without all the additonal code that Fantastico adds to WordPress so I no longer use it.

Nothing against Fantastico, it's like I said, just my own personal preference.

I do a lot of my own themes, so, to ensure compatibility, I upload WP individually for each of my blogs.

Blogger restricts you way too much and all of your blogging efforts will never really be noticed. Anyone who does any major blogging at all will tell you that a self hosted wordpress installation on your own domain name is the way to go.

Besides, it is worth the money to have a real domain name of your own to brag about online.

What I have done (and still do) is manage a blogger blog, and a wordpress.com blog and they both have relative content that I add to slowly that points to my domain where my self hosted wp blog resides. I update my self hosted wp blog daily and the others weekly. It is helping quite a bit in SEO.

I agree that a stand alone wordpress installation on your own domain is the way to go. Even if you only want to be 'blogging' and not planning on monetizing it.

If you are planning on monetizing it, it still is the best way to go. Relatively not that expensive.

8-10 bucks for a domain for a year. 5 bucks a month for a small HG account (pre-paid for a few years)

really not bad, considering a few affiliate sales and the next 3 years of domains and hosting is covered.

Besides, wordpress is just too easy.
It is getting better all the time.
The support available is incredible.
The themes available are amazing.
The plugins available are awesome.

This goes for both the free things and the commercial.

Does your cPanel have Simple Scripts? I installed WP on Hostmonster server with no problem. Keep trying.

Why not try blogger?

I totally agree with "thegotoguy".

Over 5 years ago I used Blogger.com just as was suggested in the 30 days to success.

Blogger.com is a great platform to learn on. It's really easy to use. You sign up for an account, choose your template and start posting.

Can't get much simpler than that... right?

My biggest issue, and the reason I no longer use Blogger.com is that technically the blog IS NOT MINE.

Look at the URL of your blog. It ends in blogger.com. Your URL is something like this:

http://yourblogname.blogger.com/

That basically means the blog you are working so diligently on, the blog you are trying to get indexed and drive traffic to your site with, is really nothing more than a sub-domain of blogger.com.

Chances of "your" blog being indexed are minimal at best. In other words all your hard work is pretty much for naught.

Plus, since technically the blog belongs to Blogger.com, they can take your blog down anytime they feel like it if they don't like the content or think you are SPAMMING.

Once they delete your blog or restrict your access because of ANY reason they deem fit, your hours, days, weeks, months etc are completely lost and you have to start over from scratch.

Personally, I don't want anyone telling me what I can and can't do with my blogs. THAT is why I use Wordpress on my own domains. It's MY BLOG and unless I do something seriously wrong so that my HOST shuts me down, I never have to worry about any of my personally hosted blogs.

Wordpress RULES.

On the other hand, you could also try Joomla if you are more technically minded. There are other alternatives to WordPress, but, in MY opinion, Blogger.com IS NOT one of them!

If you really want to build your online presence and your credibility, using Blogger.com ISN'T THE WAY TO GO.

You make some great points.

I agree with most of it.

I like the idea of learning in Blogger.

What is good about it as well, it won't cost you anything other than time (which is priceless) to create and manage.

Do it, and use it as a pumper site (link to your money site, articles, other web 2.0 properties...etc)

If your content is clean and occasionally you add fresh content, you really shouldn't get banned or taken down.

And IF it does, for as long as it lasts, you will be giving some link juice to something else.

Plus, some other 'Bloggers' will probably find it. Could get traffic that way.

But overall, WordPress WordPress WordPress!
