You better start making good quality backlinks by yourself or you can hire some one from a serious site. Search on freelance sites and hire someone from there (all workers have some rating, so you will pick one with a good rating because that gives you the confidence that he his a good worker and that he will make good job for you.

Let me give you an example....

For my main keyword....has over 270k results.

But there is a site that is less than a year old, PR0, less than a total 500 backlinks...this site is ranked #2. It does have 10 links from .edu/.gov sites.

The thing is has going for it the most is the domain name. They were lucky enough to get an exact match .org.

So quality backlinks are very important. The more backlinks the better.

You can compare backlinks with the business contacts.
If a site has zero links ( contacts ) it is really a lonely one
in the Internet Universe.

You can build backlinks in several ways: with articles, link exchanges,
reciprocal links, social sites, blog comments, forum posts etc.

The links have two benefits:

They bring related traffic and they will improve the ranking of your site
on the search engine result page of a particular keyword.

To get the best benefit you have to use a hyperlink with a keyword
( rather a long tail one ) as an anchor text.

How many do you need?

It depends on your targets. If your target is to rank high
with a high demand keyword, you will need a lot of them and rather
from the high PR sites, because Google appreciates these links very high.
