Hello, Search engines do not index some common words (such as "or", "and", "when", and "in") within the webpage. What are these common words called? best engineering colleges | top engineering colleges | engineering colleges rankings |

This topic thread relates to the SFI marketing plan ... but here is an answer to your 'common words' question: They are known as "stop words" according to sources on the Internet that I have just checked out after doing a search. One site provides this explanation: "Some robot programs are intuitive; they know which words are important to the meaning of the entire Web page, and some of them can find synonyms to the words and add them to the index. Some full-text databases use a robot that enables them to search on concepts, as well as on the search query words. In some search engines, the robot skips over words that appear often, such as prepositions and articles. These common words are called stop words." Here is the site (I have no relation to it): Search Strategies for Search Engines When you are on that site, click the "stop words" link and it will take you to a complete "Internet and Web Glossary" of terms and explanations. Thanks GT - I just learned how to take two posts and make them into their own thread. Good for people who cluelessly change the topic of a conversation thread. Austincruse - please read the topic before you post - if your comment is off-topic then start a new thread - you see the little black button 'new thread' at the top of the forum index? That's how to start a new topic. |

Thanks, Pat! I was hoping you would transfer it to it's own thread. Good question by Austin, too. I don't know if I ever knew that they were called stop words. GT |
