Its a complete mess up of both Do Follow and No Follow link, No Follow links are useless even if they are on PR 10 site, check out Matt Cuts blog if you want to know more. Also at most of the forums or profile settings the PR you see is of root domain and not of your own profile page secondly most of those links are seen by registered users and not crawlers. How can a single account profile have a PR of 8 within few second of registration ? Google usually updates PR after 3 months. SO the profile links you are talking about are almost useless just can be used for ip diversity but still they take a lot of time to index and in my experience of 3 years of link building 98% of them are never indexed by Google.

I might have to agree on this one. I was talking to a guy yesterday who was saying links are links etc etc...

I really don't know how to take this backlinks approach. I even thought PAGE RANK was more valuable than these links. Many people say OMG PR9!!! but in theory if the links are coming form a profile page with N/A then how useful is that or does Google still value the a link is just a link?

A link from an interior page on one of these sites carries more "Valuable" than a link on the interior page of a PR0 ,and Google is giving these types of links more weight.

Also logically there is nothing to loose in having some relevant extra links really , If just 50% of this are working, it is great and worth alot .

Some backlinks carry more weight than others and then some carry no weight at all. It all depends on where you place the link and the type of link you are placing. Some links will generate targeted traffic. Targeted traffic comes from people that search for your keywords on the search engines and find your link embedded in an article, blog , or forum post.
Some links carry what the SEO guru's call Google Juice. Links with Google Juice are those that are placed in publicly viewable profiles on High PR (Page Rank) sites. For example, Hubpages has a Page Rank (PR6) and allows us to create a profile and place backlinks inside the text. When the search engines do what they do, they send a spider that crawls the profile and notes the backlink and credits it to the targeted site as being worthy of a PR6 site, therefore giving it Google Juice .
