Monitor Your PIPS Site's Traffic
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

As you may already have known, traffic is the backbone of any online business. Without traffic, you cannot succeed at all.

Much has been mentioned by experienced marketers on SEO and how to promote your website. I would like to add, through this thread, as a piece of advice to all PIPSers, especially newbies, that it's very crucial as an online marketer to monitor your site's traffic.

You should all the time know your website's traffic rank and how you are progressing with your drive to get traffic to your website through your marketing campaigns. It helps you to know what works and what doesn't work and how to improve.

The best way of doing it is by installing a free "Alexa Toolbar Creator" on your computer so that you are able to see all the time whether there is improvement in your traffic rank or not. It's easy to install, just follow the link above and on your right hand corner of the page, you will see the link. Follow the guidelines to install it.

Another benefit of installing the Alexa Toolbar Creator on your computer is that you make it possible to know the rank of each and every website you visit. This is very important.

For instance, it's important to know first the traffic rank of the website you want to link to before doing so. If you just link to any website, Google does not value much websites whose traffic rank is low and linking to them may not so much uplift your Google ranking, though the quantity of inbound links is a key factor in your site's global link popularity.

Thanks for the info. I'd had checked it out before, but didn't download it for some reason.

Alexa results are only from visitors that have the Alexa Toolbar installed. That means the 'Alexa Rank' does not include world wide results. Also, Alexa Rank can be tricked to fake the rank. This is a long established fact and all of the best SEO Specialists have attested to the fact based on test beds, to name a few: Google Website Trends / DoubleClick Ad Planner, Compete.com, and Quantcast.

At the moment, compete.com and your own website control panel are the two preferred tools by most professional SE specialists.

Though Alexa does give a 'measurable standard' keep in mind the results are a 'proprietary standard' and for this reason the results are not accurate.

Thanks Jeffery for that additional information. It's good you note that Alexa.com gives some measurable standard to base on. I think what's important is to have some idea on how you are performing so that you can work to improve. I understand that it's not 100% accurate and I also doubt that there is another tool that is 100% accurate.

I have noted that even compete.com does not give information on all the sites. For instance I tried to check for warriorforum.com and I could not get any information on it yet it's undoubtedly one of the top websites in terms of traffic.

Secondly, using the information provided by your website control panel is also not so reliable. Not all websites are hosted with good web hosts. For example when I go to the control panel for my PIPS site, I really do not get as much and comprehensive information as I get when I check on the control panel for my other site hosted by Hostgator. It therefore depends on the web host.

warriorforum.com works. There is a limit to the number of free searches and the free information, so you may have exceeded the limit. The paid plans offer unlimited searches and different plans for different information. The paid plans are completely accurate.

The difference between host's with different control panels is not control panel 'accuracy' at all. The difference is the brand and version of the different control panel 'features' and the cron job settings (timing) for collecting the information that determines the accuracy.

Examples
1) Host A uses the Plex Control Panel and the cron that collects the traffic data is once a day.

2) Host B uses the Cpanel Control Panel with more features and the cron that collects the traffic data is once every hour.

Also, two different hosts with two different control panels with more than one domain is the main reason 'why' compete.com stands as the industry standard to track traffic.

[Conclusion]
When we want to monitor our website traffic for the good reasons that you pointed out in your original post, especially for beginners, it makes good sense to monitor 'all of the traffic' sourced at compete.com rather than 'a small portion of the traffic' sourced at alexa.com.

For those purposes these tools are also recommended:

1) Google Analytics | Official Website
Google Analytics | Official Website

Kind of complicated for beginners, but considered essential by professional SE Specialists..

2) Free Web Stats - StatCounter
statcounter.com/free-web-stats/

Very easy for beginners and one of my personal favorites.

Elaborate explanation. Thanks a lot. My only concern is that not many people can afford to pay that amount of money charged by compete.com every month. One would find it easier to use tools that are free or pocket friendly. In this case you recommend by implication that one should use Google Analytics and Free Web Stats other than Alexa. Am I right? What would you consider to be the percentage of inaccuracy with Alexa?

Well goleza, if you would do your own research here at the WF you will find that all of the professionals mirror everything I have already explained ~ and have been doing so for many years. Also, if you look back at what I have already explained - your last questions are mute.

Wish you all the success with your Alexa Toolbar.

Hi Goleza,

As Jeffery has stated Alexa gives you a "measureable standard" but not totally accurate as I bet the average person looking at your website does not have the Alexa toolbar or even knows what it is....

Yes you should set up Google Analytics as a basis of finding out where you rank for certain keywords and the traffic you are getting....(only from Google of course).

Take care

Every day is a day of learning new things. I really respect your contributions and I believe others will learn a lot from your expertise on this matter. Thanks for your informative contributions to this thread.

One other unrelated matter I would like to be clarified on is transfering my PIPS site domain name registration to namecheap.com for some reason. But when I checked I discovered that there is some kind of protection. I also want to change the hosting company to one that uses cpanel.

I don't really whether it's acceptable by PIPS. Any advice or clarification on how to go about it?

Goleza - what is the reason you want to change your domain registrar? This is an unnecessary hassle and can cost you $10 for nothing. If you just need to change DNS (to change hosts) you should be able to do that. Contact the Registrar for all questions about your domain registration. There is no hold except for in the first days of a new registration (about 7 - but sometimes up to 60 days)

You might just want to wait until it is time to renew the domain registration (usually annually) and then use a new registrar - but again I don't understand why.

As for using cpanel - both pluginprofithost (justhost) and GVO/HTP use cpanel. We are encouraging people to move their hosting to GVO because we have had some serious issues with JustHost and that is why we now require all new members to host with GVO - we are not adding anybody else even existing members with new domains etc to JustHost.

Thanks Pat for your reply to my question. Well, the reason for changing is good service, convenience and cost. I feel I should have my sites registered at one place and hosted with one company. I have so far used two companies in this regard, namecheap.com and Hostgator. I have not only used them for my other website but I have also used them for hosting websites I design for others and I am contented with their services. However, I can also consider using GVO for some good reasons.

As regards changing the domain name, I also noticed when I wanted to renew that it's relatively cheaper with namecheap than with the current registrar of my PIPS site.
