1. Replace the user 'admin' with a new admin level user, whose username mixes letters, numbers and characters
2. Give your new admin user a password that also mixes letters, numbers and characters
3. Change your Nickname so it's not the same as your Username
4. Change the wp_ prefix in database table names
5. Use SFTP rather than FTP
6. Move the wp-config.php file up a level if you can - remember that with some hosting configurations this will not work.
7. Make sure all critical folders have a blank index.html file
8. Keep all plugins, themes and the WordPress core up to date
9. Delete plugins and themes that you're not using (don't just deactivate them)
10. Then install a security plugin - and the one I use and recommend is Wordfence.
I have a .htaccess file in my WP admin that restricts access only to my static IP-address. And turn off listing of folders in Apache (options indexes), index files in every folder not needed then.

You can get a free WP plugin that run a auto update on the core files, themes and plugins.

And change the username from admin to something better. Wordpress sites are being targeted these days.

I don't like plugins.
They often bloat your wordpress and make it slow.

More $$ come in when your website is fast.

So my plugin list is very short.

Caching / Speed:
WP Minify (Check if your template doesn't screw up)
WP Super Cache
Jetpack (the CDN is awesome!)

I don't use W3 Total Cache because I ofter got problems with it.
This solution, with the hosting (SHARED, low price) I use, give me top-notch speed.

SEO
Wordpress SEO

And in case you reaaaally need social,
Social
Facebook
Flare

I also tried DiggDigg (which is good floating bar) but they didn't solve the bugs very quickly.

how to be happier and learn to control fear & anger (woah. I didn't even capitalize this because it's not an ad, it's my advice and personal experience)

Hey Jeffery...

What's a good "cache" plugin besides the WP Super Cache plugin?

I had problems with one of my sites and the techs said it was the Super Cache plugin. I really don't believe it, because none of my other website are having a problem.

Also, what is a good password lock plugin? I was using Login Lock, but it's no longer on the plugin list.

Thanks...

Hi there,

since the GVO-Hoster is pretty slow, I installed a Cache-Plugin to my site. So I thought I will tell you some other helpfull Plugins I'm using. And asking you what plugins you use to pimp up your PIPS?!

"Share Buttons by AddThis" to have some Like-Buttons for Facebook.
"Cachify" to speed up the site.
"spinrewriter" to spin those 300 PLR articles that come with that site (and those you get in the Co-Op). Those are useless for SEO since they are all the same on all of our sites. But when you spin them, you will have 300 unique articles that google likes. Your need an account for it: Spin Rewriter 3.0 - Special Offer on our Article Spinner - Best Article Rewriter Out There!
"Strictly Auto Tags" Eventhough it's better to chose your tags on your own with some research. I like to do it with one click. This plugin will scan your blog-posts and inserts the relevant tags automaticly
"PhotoDropper" to get some nice free pictures into the blog posts.
"SEO Friendly Images" to make those phots SEO-Friendly.

What are your little helpers?

Re: WordPress Tips

I use these basic plugins and more, "Automatic WordPress Backup" keeps my site backed up on Amazon S3 daily. "Blog Syndicator Pro" adds syndication blogs to my site for back links from Wordpress, Blogger, Live Journal and more. "All In One SEO Pack" is good if you are targeting more than one keyword per page other wise "Wordpress SEO by Yoast" targets one main keyword per post, and it also does your sitemap, or you can use "Google XML Sitemaps" to produce them. I use StatCounter for my site analytics using "Official StatCounter Plugin" I prefer "Sociable" for my social bookmarking. When you are collecting emails and information on your websites, I use "Google Privacy Policy" and "Affiliate disclosure statement" when I have affiliate programs running. These are the bare essentials, there are other plugins that give other function to your sites.

All in one SEO works fine for SEO purpose! It is easy to use.

But you have to choose your own plugins depending on the purpose and functionality of the WP site.

Hello guys, i want to ask you about change of plugin, my website have over 2 years now (all time on - all in one seo pack) but i want to change it for yoast - and here is my question - Do you thinks turn off and delete All in one seo pack on about 150 posts on that website can make bad resulsts? And couple days withou any plugin, because it will take time to configure it.

I hope you will help me with it.

One good thing is to go to the Wordpress Plug Ins button - Add New - then click on the Recommended Plug-Ins button.

You will then be shown the main Plug-Ins it is pretty important to have. Both SEO and for the optimum running of the site.
