Is Submitting Content To Online Directories Still Gainful?
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

I may sound a little bit funny and ignorant on this matter but I have observed for some time, through the Web Traffic Tracker I installed on my PIPS site, that most of the traffic to my site do not actually come from the online directories where I submit my articles but from other sources.

This is why I hard to ask myself and also bring it here in the forum that "Is submitting content to online directories still beneficial?" "Should one spend time and other resources on submitting content to them?" What's your observation? And what are the valid facts on it?

With the last Panda and Penguin Updates...it seems that the article directories got hit pretty hard.

I have seen this question asked on a couple different forums. There are those that say to continue using article directories and then there are those that said they weren't going to use them.

I use most of my content on my blogs. That seems to bring more traffic to my websites. If I have some extra time, I might drop an article in a directory and see what happens.

I think you are very right because what I actually see is that with the many articles I have submitted to hundreds of online directories through an article submission service provider, I rarely see traffic referred from those website.

Secondly, when I do a keyword search on the articles I submitted, I don't see those sites where I submitted my articles appearing in the first results but I can see my sites appearing. This is what made ask myself, "Is it worth spending on article submission services?"

What you have said on the Panda and Penguin updates is probably the cause of that trend of events, isn't it?

I recommend posting original content on high page rank web 2.0 properties and social media sites because they get ranking on their own very quickly and will drive traffic while at the same time helping your overall rankings of your primary website. Here are some examples of how to do this.

I had an article directory for many years. I noticed it never got high ranking but people still submitted articles and I had hundreds of thousands.

Then it broke and I had to limit the number of articles, I could not upgrade the software and I could get no support -

So I am not running it anymore -- but now I am getting requests to remove links because of Panda/Penguin and the authors getting reports that the links are bothering their ranking. I guess I have to delete the sub-domain where it is located - not sure what will happen to everybody when I do that - years of work wasted for everybody.

It is down right fascism. No other way to look at it.

Even the previously powerful EzineArticles is no longer of value in my opinion.

I think directories and article submission sites are just link farms with no value....

There will always be a place for online directories and article submission sites. That's unless you are obsessed with reaching the number one spot on Google. People find our websites from all sorts of weird places so don't sell yourself short by not using everything in your traffic generation arsenal.

Having said that, I think that it's better to submit guest blog posts to blogs with good PR that are related to what you are posting about. Alternatively, you can post about generic topics that are useful across various niches.

I think that it also depends on your target audience.

For example, one thing that everyone with a website, whatever the niche, needs is a way to get more traffic to their sites. A significant portion of traffic to every website or blog is made up of webmasters from the same or different niches.

This audience can easily be found in forums like WF, traffic exchanges, list builders, safelists, etc, without worrying about Google Pandas or Penguins.

Everyone else seems to be hanging out at Facebook or Twitter....

At least I see some traffic originating from EzineArticles. But I do not at all see traffic coming from other directories where I have submitted articles for more than a year. This is why I had to come up with this thread for discussion. I really do not see the return on investment. What do others say?

This is an interesting revelation. I would like to once again hear your comment on whether it's still of benefit to invest one's time and money in submitting articles to directories basing on your experience and current trend of events.

Hi Goleza -

Yes because we may still look at this from the viewpoint of 'establishing yourself as an expert' and providing useful and informative content for PEOPLE.

While the opportunity to rank for SEO has tanked, we have to remember that while Search Engines may or may not drive free traffic to our sites when we have lots of back links, they still do not ever buy anything or join any programs - (robots don't have money).

So we have to remember that PART of our target audience is still PEOPLE.

I have never since many years ago believed in massive submissions - posting the same article in 10-directories because we learned only the 1st one will get the backlink and the 9 other's are ignored. (duplicate content)

Then came 'spinning' and making the submissions slightly different so they would all 'rank'.

It's a lot of work and now that the benefits of doing it have been limited or restricted, I wouldn't put that much effort into it.

... but one time, maybe I still would.
