Which GetResponse Opt-In Setting Are You Using ?
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

Just would like to gather some feedback from fellow pipster about the BEST opt-in settings that you are using in your GetResponse account. which one works better Confirmed opt-in or Non-confirmed opt-in ?

From GetResponse definition :-

"Confirmed opt-in" - subscribers can verify their intentions to be added, and confirm their subscription.
"Non-confirmed opt-in" - subscribers are immediately added to your list and no confirmation message is sent to them.

I prefer Non-confirmed but just worry about spam complaints and spoofed email addresses issue.

Would like to hear your views and experience..

Thanks,
Jinmin

Hi Jinmin,

It is always best to use double opt in.

If someone is really interested in your newsletter they will take the time to confirm their optin.

If you don't use double optin you are utting yourself at risk of spam complaints. Also, people could type in the wrong email address, or put in someone else's email address and if you don't use double optin, the wrong person will start receiving your emails.

Cheers,
Suzanne

I totally agree with Suzanne. I know it can be a pain, especially if you import any leads into your campaign. They'll still have to confirm, but most do.

When you signed up to PIPS, the confirmed option is already ticked and can't be undone. There's a good reason for this. More and more marketers are moving to double opt-in lists because of the spam problem.

I do concur with Suzanna and Alan. The best option and safest way is double opt-in. This will help you get rid of "ghost subscribers" and avoid spam complaints.

Good luck

I use double opt-in myself, but I'm leaning toward the quadruple opt-in after watching this video: Viddler.com - The Quadruple Opt-In - Uploaded by deschet

It's very convincing. ;-)

Hey Stone,

Thanks for the video...at least it convinced me that I should stick with double opt-in for now and not single opt-in.

After seeing all of the responses, you have probably already decided what makes sense on the Get Response Opt-In settings. I am fairly new to this system, but I've used auto responders in the past. I was called every name in the book by people that accepted messages from me in a "non-confirmed" system. I guess they "opted in" late at night or when they were drunk , because many did not remember asking for my information and got very belligerent. I do not ever want to go there again! I will follow the Confirmed Opt-in setting!

Good Luck,

Hi Jake,

I remembered receiving email from an upset subscriber (few months ago) who apparently forgotten that he had opted-in to my list. In his email, he warned me not to email him again or else he will make a report against me....

Guess what, I have all his opt-in records (IP, date, time) and I am using double opt-in....
That's why after watching the video that Stone posted, I think the triple or even quadruple opt-in may be the best way to go in the near future

I can't stand people like that. The easy thing to do is just tell him to unsubscribe if he's that mad about it. He's the one that opted-in, so he should make the effort to unsubscribe. Funny how people complain about stuff but don't want to put any effort into resolving the situation the easy and common sense way.

I remember getting an email from a guy who didn't mind receiving my emails, but wanted them to stop for now. Well, I can't just stop sending him emails and then start up again at his convenience, of course. So, I told him if he wanted them to stop, he'll have to use the unsubscribe link. Haven't heard from him since. His English was horrible as well.

I have yet to get a complaint like that, but I'm not doubting it could happen. I haven't heard of triple or quadruple opt-in before. Where's that video at?

Hi Alan,

This is the video that Stone posted yesterday....although quadruple opt-in may affect and drop the opt-in rate but I really like the idea

This would most likely stop all spam complaints. However, like you said, I really don't know who would go through all of the trouble in providing proof of citizenship, and then to top it off, provide a blood sample. I don't see the opt-in rate being high at all. I'm content with double opt-in and haven't had a problem yet.

I have joined two days before and your training is very interesting and very informative. Hope I can do better in internet marketing. I have already upgraded my getresponse account to PRO status.

Thanks for adding that, Stone.

I wasn't aware we could change the web subscription as it won't let you for the import option. I've changed mine to single opt-in, so we'll see what happens.

I pretty much agree with everyone else. While single opt-in may get more subscribers, as was mentioned earlier some may either put in the wrong address or "forget" that they signed up or whatever. With double opt-in, they have to verify their interest. This would also be to your credit if you get spam complaints. They have no case against you if they had to double confirm it.

Very true. Even with single opt-in you still have their IP address and date that they subscribed. It's not as concrete in protecting you as double opt-in, but it's better than nothing.

I'm going to try single opt-in for a while, and if I don't like it or get any complaints I'll switch it back.

Hey Alan,

Not sure if this ever came to light but last year one of the other affiliate programs I belong to,(it was once a core program of PIPS), sent out a training e-mail on this subject. In that e-mail this CEO stated that in the USA during some point in 2009 a new law would require you to be using double opt-in for your entire list and have proof if checked by the government or they would force you to delete your list and fine you.

Not sure if our government has the ability to really track something like that nor am I sure if it really became a law and if so when it takes affect since I am a firm believer in double opt-in and never kept tabs on this proposed law. But it is food for thought. Can you imagine the loss to some one like Stone if he used single opt-in and this law really came about and they checked his list and he lost it. WOW!!

Just thought I would share that tidbit of info I recall from last year.

Best Regards,
Roy

Hi Alan,

Are you using Getresponse too ? According to the Getresponse, once the double opt-in has been switched on, it cannot be switched off. My double opt-in has been on, so I guess I will stick to the double opt-in, and it is best practice anyway...

I found this on Getresponse Setting Page :

"You may enable "confirmed opt-in" for each method individually. Once the confirmed opt-in has been switched on, it cannot be switched off."

From my experience, other autoresponder also does not allow the user to simply turn the double opt-in on/off. I assume that's normal..
If I have choice, I would also like to experience how single opt-in perform, just to compare which one works better.

Hi Roy,

That's quite interesting. I haven't heard anything about that, but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen. Thanks for the heads up. I'll keep an eye out on it. I'm not quite sure how they would be able to track it, though.

That would be quite devastating if I, or even Stone, were to lose our entire list.

Hi Jinmin,

I do use Getresponse. I thought the same thing as well, but after checking out the link Stone posted and going to check if it can be done, I found out it can. You can switch the confirmation off for web subscriptions. Now, for importing you won't be able to switch it off, but both email and web subscriptions you can. So if you want to try the single opt-in you can.

Thanks for the info. I am going to give single opt-in a try. Just wondering in terms of opt-in rate as I noticed some gurus are using it....

Hello,

Here's a tip that I came across some time back about using
double opt-ins... Because people tend to forget about clicking
on that link to approve receiving that email - or it gets buried
in the hoards of emails - give an added incentive to the
would-be subscriber.

For example, once they've put in their name and email add,
send them to a page that tells them (either with text, audio
or video) that to thank them for their time, once they confirm
the opt-in, you'll send them an extra free report - which can
either be yours or a PLR report.

As long as it's an added benefit.

The main thing is to get them to want to confirm it. The only
extra work for you is to upload the file via FTP, add a link in
your autoresponder and that's it!

Very good tips, Asher. Here's what my confirmation page looks like...
Thank you for subscribing to our newsletter...

I saw another marketer do something very similar and thought it would be beneficial to spell out the action you want them to take in terms of confirming their intent.

So far I haven't seen an increase in subscribers. I'll give it another week or so and then most likely switch it back to double opt-in.
