I know there has to be many PIPsters with outdated WordPress blogs. I recently did a video for another project that didn't work out. So I hope this will help everyone out that wants to tackle it on their own. Please remember to backup everything as shown first! Here is the video: WordPress Upgrade Video Guide And here is an older text guide: Upgrade WordPress Guide How To Upgrade WordPress |

Hi Jeff, I have been using the automatic upgrade plug-in which greatly simplifies the upgrade process. Unfortunately I couldn't get it to work with H4P, there response that it is poorly coded and will eventually break my site. Well I have been running it on three other hosts for the last few months and it has worked perfectly. Of course it is still advised to backup your site first though. The built in automatic plug-in upgrade feature didn't work for me either on H4P hosting. Have you had any luck using these with H4P? Cheers, Mike. |

Funny how it works on most other hosts huh? I have seen the built-in upgrade work on version 2.7 to 2.71. But first you need to ask H4P to turn on access to the tmp folder. But older versions of WP prior to 2.7 with the plugin never worked. All the plugins folders need to be writable for them to be upgraded automatically on H4P. No matter what host you are using there is always the chance of the automatic upgrade to go wrong and then you will need to do it manually anyway. And might even need to restore the database. |

I am using H4P now and when I upgrade my WP blog from 2.7 to 2.71 is totally fine. I did not face any problem.

Make sure you deactivate the Automatic Upgrade plugin (if you have it) once running version 2.7 and above, it's included in the core now. You can also run into issues updating plugins if using the One Click Plugin Updater. Either deactivate it or configure it to use the WordPress core option. The settings for it is Upgrade Options under the plugins module. |

Here is my issue with upgrading automatically - Please tell me if I am being paranoid. One of my Wordpress blogs the theme is totally custom - it started out as a standard theme but then I had the header put in from my existing website which was built with WebsiteWizard and this required lots of resizing, etc. It has other elements that have come from this theme and that site - It has been upgraded manually in some respects, but is right now several versions out of date, along with my 2 others that need upgrading I am afraid if I do the auto update that it will affect these parts and I will not know what to do to fix it (of course the original guy that built it is not available. Am I silly? By the way, I was going to wait for the roll out before I announced that Host4Profit is upgrading scripts - now (it's my day off and just dropped in to see any spammers) There are 3 and they have to do with WordPress, Joomla and PHPBB I think. (don't quote me there because I don't feel like looking up actual quotes form H4P). So looks like for the most part people will not have to leave H4P to take advantage of some of Mike's stuff and will make it easier on Jeff too. Thank you for another installment in my Houdy's WordPress Library. |

I suggest doing a database backup on a regular basis like weekly, you can use several database plugins that you can configure and schedule to email a backup to you. Remember the database holds the content (except uploaded images) not the actual files. The files just tell WordPress what to do it doesn't hold any content. Then keep a copy of the wp-config.php file (in the main WordPress directory) and the entire wp-content folder. The wp-content folder holds the plugins, themes and uploaded images. It also has the uploads folder in it that holds any images you uploaded to show on your posts. Plugins can be found again and added back in so big deal there. Same thing for themes unless you have a custom theme then certainly have a backup of at least that one. And the uploads like a custom theme can not be replaced unless you have a backup. So instead of just picking out the important things in the wp-contnet folder just FTP all of it onto your computer at first. Then just backup the theme when/if you make any changes to it. After that make regular backups of the uploads folder if you add a lot of images on a regular basis. Glad to hear H4P finally getting the message about the scripts!

Since you're using HostGator, just go to Fantistico in your CPanel and find Wordpress on the left hand column. Click that and start the install process. It will install Wordpress on your site within seconds. Take Care, Alan

Given the latest security breech on versions prior to WP version 2.8.3 you should upgrade immediately! It does seem that the more popular WP blogs are getting hacked but still its not worth the hassle. Addressed here: http://www.wordpressmax.com/wordpres...wordpress-blog |
