Trial offer for $1, is it a trick?
Share on:

Hi,

Some where in July, I did order for the trial offer about the creating the websites that sell. It was about $2.95 and shipment charges $10.99. I thought since it is cheap, why not I try. No harm in that. I was never received anything for that. Just 2 days ago I received email saying that they charged me for $69 for their product. I never order this, I just order the product that they offer for $2.95. I was angry and email them back and asked why they charged me without my permission.

My question to our senior members, can we trust a speciall offer for like $1.00 or $2.00? I think this is just a trick to get our credit card number so that they can charged us for thier other products? It make me scared innitially and I was thinking should I continue with my online business if this type of people around online.

Usually a $1.00 offer or any small number is a limited trial offer or a getting started cost. Most are good for X number of days. After those days have expired they will charge you the standard fee. It is common practice do do that.

That means when you sign up for a low cost starting fee you can expect a bigger charge at the end of the period specified. You will have stay on top of those or you can forget the dates easily. If you forget you get charged.

I think the number one thing to think about before giving up a buck or two is would you buy the product at the normal price. If you would then buy it but if you wouldn't or if you are unsure don't throw away any money. Not even a dollar.

I think, we all learn from our experiences and unless you suffer some loss, there's no way you can learn!
So, I think this was a good experience.
The whole idea is to be cautious before spending even a single buck.

I would just be really careful before handing any money over at all. It's easy to get trapped into all these great offers but they seem to never stop. Someone is always advertising the next best thing.

Best not to spend any money at all and start making money instead.

Yes, be careful and read everything. There are some legits out there. I paid $1 for a 7 day inspection of a course by Robert Allen (well known). I called within the 7 days to cancel and did so with no problem.

Cheers...Leon

It is a painful lesson to learn, but one you won't forget.

It is a good idea to check with members in the forum first before you sign up to anything new.

Your best bet is to focus on what you have already. It takes enough effort to get PIPS going well without being side tracked by the "next big thing" which is gone in a few months.

Yeah, the $1 trial is probably only for a short period of time.

Don't take it too hard, just treat it a lesson earned. Be careful of small wordings at the bottom of the page next time. Even banks like to do this as well, the bad things are written is small wordings.

I happen to believe you are right. Unfortunately that is the way it is done all too often but it doesn't have to be. Learning first and applying second should be the way it's done.

Just be thankful that it was not a large sum of money. I got caught with an entirely different internet marketing deal where I paid a small amount but did not read the fine print and was caught with huge freight costs to return the product!

Hi Kang,
It is good to see a fellow Malaysian in the Forum. Here's my experience with offers. What I have experienced so far is all genuine (but one must be very careful in cyberspace) and like many have pointed out earlier, you need to read the fine print or you end up paying more than necessary. Free or cheap trial offers fall mostly into the following categories.

1. As it is, with no further action and some are good deals.
2. Time based, you need to unsubscribed in time or you'll be charged the full, hefty amount. You must keep track of the trial period and this is easy to overlook if you get into too many offers. Check first that it is easy to unsubscribe before you commit.
3. Cyclic (usually monthly or even weekly) charging but you must check their charging cycle as some may not be for a full month but from a certain date.
4. Hefty shipping and handling charges, especially for us in Malaysia and even more for sending the items back if you are not happy with it.
5. Money back guarantee, again need to keep track since these are usually valid within a certain period only.

Cheers.

Wow, Ronald. I salute you.

I just went to your blog and realised that you're a retiree on pension.

But you're still learning how to do internet marketing at the same time.

Hats off, I sincerely salute you.

Hi Kang,
I joined PIPS towards the end of March and this Forum about a month later. Have not been very active here. Also no success story so far as I have not been very focused and too much distraction (also dabbling in Forex trading) as you can read in my blog. Other than starting my blog I did not do much other activities as suggested so I need to put in more effort. Do not be discouraged since you have just started and mine is not a good example. It's never easy and it's very competitive as you realised. You can PM me if you want further information.

Hi Asher,
Thanks for your comments. I suppose it's never to late or too old to learn and it keeps my mind (and fingers) busy. Even if I do not make money, I have gained knowledge in the process. Too bad, need to compete with energetic youngsters like you.........Never mind.

Cheers,
Ronald
