I guess there are exceptions to this because they do exist somehow - however it is a gamble...

You can also be penalized by the search engines if your link is associated with these.


Stick to actual real marketing - blogs, forums, social networks, article directories, manual traffic exchanges, and permission based email, etc.

But my problem has not so much been getting traffic, but converting the traffic into people joining or even downloading the free Dotcomology E-Book, or the Newbie Videos. After 3 months I have had lots of traffic but no one single signup. Evidently the traffic I have been getting is from the wrong side of the tracks? Or is it my site? Any offers or suggestions will be GREATLY appreciated. If I could just START my list I would be encouraged somewhat. But 3 months and not even 1 signup on my list other than me, I have to be doing something wrong. HELP!

Not to hijack the thread, but everyone is talking about installing blogs on your Wordpress site.

Would there be any difference for Google ranking purposes and for traffic to your site if there was a message board installed instead of a blog?

I believe a message board would better serve my purposes, but would just like to know how a message board vs. blog would compare.

My main site is one that I print photos on canvas. I'm also a photographer and sell many prints. I believe a message board on my site would bring others together in a place such as WF where different categories and topics would benefit better than just a blog.

Why not the best of both worlds? Have both a blog and a message board on your site, then visitors would have a choice. People love having options.

The blog is beneficial because you can post personal and insightful details about your craft and your experience ... AND your visitors can post comments, if they choose.

A message board (like a forum) does provide options for more topic threads and more discussion and interaction between visitors and members.

However, as an active member of several forums and administrator for one in particular, I know that many forums are challenged to get enough traffic and participation to keep them exciting and appealing. A forum or message board on a website such as you are suggesting might have difficulty keeping it exciting.

I'm not trying to discourage you from your idea. Just saying that 'options' make people happy and offer you the best of both worlds.

I understand what you're saying about keeping things interesting on a forum so that folks sign up and remain. I planned on having a board dedicated to photography, cameras, photo editing, printing, etc... I visit several of each of these boards already and none of them are short on members.

A few of my buddies are also pro photographers too and they have agreed to help me moderate the forum, and contribute valuable content.

There is still a high probability of doing both a blog and a forum on my site. I was just curious if Google favored one over the other.

I'm not sure if Google favours one over the other, but I do know that the more variety you have in your marketing styles, the more it improves the perceived value of your website.

It sounds like you have a good feeling for your market and the potential for success for a message board service. I say go for it! A blog is still a good idea, but if your interest is in the board, then that is where you should start.

Although there is much more to it than this, here is the abbreviated explanation.

There are what I call two ways to use Social Bookmarking: the direct way and the indirect way.

The direct way is to join social sites like forums, Facebook, Twitter, IM faceplate, MySpace and many others, set up your member profile with links back to your website, and then become ACTIVE on those sites to build up your presence and your reputation as a contributing member. Whenever you make a new blog post, add other content to your website, or submit articles to article directories, then go back to your social sites and post the link or an announcement.

The indirect way is to use a service like Onlywire where you set up a variety of social sites that will automatically "bookmark" links to your new posts or articles when you instruct the Onlywire service to do so.

Forums and social sites are great for traffic ... when you are active in those sites. Members need to see that you are active, supportive, participating and approachable. When they see you, they are motivated to visit your site to see what you promote.

Blogging is great for traffic as long as you research your keywords adequately and you optimize the blog post appropriately.

Article marketing can be good, but the results are not always immediate. And again, if you research your keywords thoroughly, write the article well and optimize it properly, you can speed up the process.
