Individual pages on your site can still rank highly now that you now where you went wrong. The age of the site helps with the page rank so at least that is going for you with a site that isn't brand...

Go to yahoo site explorer and enter one of your competitors sites and click "explore". The links to the site will be displayed and you can find many blogs in your niche that you know will be linked.
