Depending on your host, you don't have to do anything with the wordpress install... say you host on godaddy, you can put a page in / , name it default.htm and it will be what is displayed when you...

Create a separate landing page. Don't put any product for sale on the landing page because the entire point of that page will be for visitors to input their email in order to receive a free ebook....

If you cold called 30 businesses and got 30 people to give you their information, I would say cold calling worked great... your follow up is what isn't working.
