I also doubt you will be sandboxed... If I am your competetion, I could dump a load of links on you and get you sandboxed, it isn't that easy. Google may pay no attention to the links and not count...

A rule of thumb I used is create a google alerts for your keyword.

This will send you each and every day a list of articles related to your KW.

Then each and every day create some back links...

If it is a blog, or you create new pages, start the process all over again for those internal pages.

I'd have to agree. If you look like you're trying to game the system, you may get sandboxed, at least for a while, but I don't think backlinks will get you deindexed or black listed.

I would never build "massive" backlinks - even after ten years. Backlink building has to look natural, otherwise the SEs will just blacklist your site.

while page rank is a good indicator - keep building backlinks with the appropriate keyword as anchor text to your site. I have seen sites with PR-0 outrank sites with PR-1. So don't worry too much...
