My method for adwords external is something like this:

1. Type in your main keyword, make sure the "synonyms" box is checked and once the results are populated, select "exact" from the drop down...

I have also notice that Google give priority to pages with lots of outgoing links. This shows authority and willingness to share links. Also IM'ers tend not to provide...
