All depends on what kind of affiliate site you have.

If you're doing something like amazon, then you almost have to do SEO because paid traffic is too expensive to survive on 3% profit share or...

You should really never be direct linking today. Build a list! I work on seo as a secondary. I do a lot of youtube plus I run bing ads pretty much 24/7 and well as sponsor post in facebook.
