If the links are irrelevant and don't do any good to your website, you need to disavow them. If these are quality links, then there is no harm in keeping them.

If they're quality backlinks, enjoy them. If they're spammy or irrelevant, disavow them. If you decide to keep them, then see what pages most of the links pointed to. You may wish to recreate some of...

As you suspect, your domain was probably owned before.

Years ago, I bought a domain only to discover that it had been blacklisted. That created chaos because I only discovered it after my product...

If you are certain that the links are of no use and can harm your site. Then disavow them. It will be the simplest answer.
