backlinks can never hurt you. Otherwise we could all just backlink our competitors to death... THere is still seo value from backlinks.

You do not get as much 'link juice' per link anymore....

Think of backlinks as 'votes' for your site or page. If you receive 1 vote from a site and give 1 vote to the same site, they basically cancel each other out, unless the other site has much more...

Agreed with dburk. Google is very aware in low quality sites that are always spamming the market that's why google is normally change its algorithm for important reasons.

I think the heart of the matter is the review process. Sites that put junk up will not rank as well. We've seen an increase in link directory business since article directories have been penalized.

A link is a link at the end of the day, however if the site the link is on has been penalised - and it's likely that all article sites will be eventually, that penalty is going to be passed through...

I feel those backlinks are going to lose value, but I doubt anyone will get penalised as such. But if your site RELIED on these kinds of backlinks it could SEEM like it got penalised.
