That setting means exactly what it says: to let anybody to register as a "user" into your WP site.
As it was said above: UNCHECK that box immediately before a hacker kid screws up...

Google slightly favors hyphens because keywords are easier to pinpoint, but for practical purposes and to make it easier for people to remember and type in, I never use hyphens in any of my domains.
