Yes that may effect things as you are bound to get more competitors eventually. You might as well get the advantage of having an aged domain though. The bigger challenge may be bigger companies...

It sounds like something you should jump on while you still can. If someone is advertising on the keyword on google, there is bound to be a way to make money from it, even if it is just from adsense.
