I really like Simple Machine Forum. It's easy (simple) to use. There are plenty of mods to adapt your forum to what you want it to do. Many of these mods are free.

This is not necessarily true. vB is great, but IPB (Invision Power Board) is certainly right there with it. It's a matter of taste and needs/wants.

Go to Fantastico and you'll see that you have two options for forums: PHP and SMF

Easy to set up - but I can't give you any other input as I've never had need to...

It depends on the provider. Some charge 50+ for an ssl and some only charge for the IP address. There are providers out the offering GlobalSign SSL certs for free.

If you need an SSL certificate, you need a dedicated IP address for each domain. The domains would need to be split up into individual accounts in order to do this the correct way.
