The penalty won't pass to your main site. But it will show low quality "spammy" links are pointing to your site. Which doesn't look very good for you.

New site will have this problem. Since your site has low DA, it will go down in the SERP's. Your site will come into rankings over time. Just keep building quality links and try Guest Posting as well.

I think that definition of Long tail keyword varies depending on who you ask. It's more relative in my opinion. What I think is a long tail keyword may not be to someone else; and vice versa.
