The penalty won't pass to your main site. But it will show low quality "spammy" links are pointing to your site. Which doesn't look very good for you.

Most people that setup web 2.0's do it...

In my experience, each web 2.0 is like its own little domain.

So it stands to reason that a penalized web 2.0 is similar to a penalized site in the eyes of big G.

I certainly don't think it will hurt your rankings. And it probably will help. There are some people who think that these "social signals" are picked up by Google and can positively impact rankings.

I think that definition of Long tail keyword varies depending on who you ask. It's more relative in my opinion. What I think is a long tail keyword may not be to someone else; and vice versa.
