You have to analyze the top 3 websites in the SERP. Those are your competition. Check backlinks, site structure, internal linking, etc.

NO! you do not *need* VPS for link building.

You can get commodity links by running blasts from some link automation softwares, but in the longer run those types of links will do you more harm...
