Offering a valuable product for free is always a good technique. People love freebies. Another thing you can do is to offer some discount on products for subscribers. This one also works well.

Launch a WSO giving away an original product for free, and ask them after purchase to join your list before accessing...

Try to send some traffic to your page in niche you are promoting it can be either free seo/youtube/facebook or paid and offer them some incentive for participating warm them up with some follow ups...

Normally I offer a free product with an OTO right after.
The main reason for the OTO is not to make money
but to get some money back after I buy solo ads.

i already have a list and a good readership on my blog so if i wanted to build a new list i would be able to do it quite easily and get the ball rolling pretty quickly by not paying for any traffic
