Building lists with Joomla

I was thinking to gather a lot of free ebooks,
upload them to a Joomla driven site,
let people signup as users to download them.
And use the userbase as a mailinglist.
But, is this a good idea and is there any problems I should know about...?
I don't like to pay for a thing I can set a PHP-script to do for free.

    Start with a in-house mailing list (or even use Joomla extensions) but be sure to monetize the list quickly so as to move over to a professional autoresponder service as quickly as possible - crazy to be penny wise and pound foolish when you are talking about something as central to your business as your mailing list!
