The best programming language to develop web systems

Hello guys, I worked some years with programming for automation systems, basically with microcontrollers and as I´m electrical engineer, I did some basical courses of algorithms and programming too, but I never programmed for web.

My intention is not learn how to make websites, for that I use wordpress, but how to build some applications, like hotels/vacations sites (tripadvisor, hostels, trivago, airbnb etc), with all the functions of these sites (in wordpress, plugins).

My doubt is: which are the best languages and another stuff to this purpose?

I think a good choise can be PHP + HTML + CSS + Javascript + SQL. What do you think about this choice? And about Ruby?

ps: I wish develop the systems to work in wordpress plataform.

    Front End
    Angular / Ionic or Angular / Cordova if you want to make X-platform apps.

    Back End
    REST based Tokenized API
    Symfony or Phalcon. I prefer Phalcon these days because of it's Symfony like query structure that is implemented in super fast C bindings.

    Woops saw your Wordpress requirements.

    Better just learn PHP/HTML5/CSS3/JAVASCRIPT then. Forget SQL, you won't need it.You will use Wordpress query functions instead.

    Forget Ruby. It's dead already and has virtually no utility in Wordpress.

    BUT

    Before you do all that and become another useless developer on the web. Learn http protocol. Learn DNS, Learn application development sans no language in abstract. Then go about and learn the rest of that muck. Learn why things work and become a effective developer.

  • Learn API too if you want to do the types of sites you listed. Check out codeacacademy.com (free) udemy.com (paid) and youtube (free) for courses.

    Heloo.... I am a professional web developer and have a lot of experience in web development. I have used a number of languages for developing web systems and they are running successfully but the language which is most trust able and I found it easy to handle and understand and that is loaded early is PHP. I have 5+ years of experience in working with this language and have made many successful projects using custom php they are going awsum. I prefer PHP as it is the language which can be used in all the CMS and its hacking is very difficult as it requires many passwords which should be broken first for its hacking and there are many other things that secure this language from being hacked. If you need to develop any CMS you should first think of the language most trust ale and i say its PHP... PHP 5 is more advanced....

    There are probably as many answers as there are programmers. I'm for example stuck with PHP/mysql, because 10 years ago when I started doing something with it, it was the best if not the only tool. For sure there are better tools now, but IMO PHP still remains the simplest and yet can deal with most jobs. Of course it has a lot of haters, but whatever. For developing frontend you won't escape from JS/CSS. In backend it's mostly data(bases) and business rules. There are billllions as Carl Sagan would say, books/videos tutorials on how to start with PHP. I'm actually thinking of writing my own course (sic!) something like "how to become php programmer in a month" and finally start making some passive income.
