Hello eveybody! I am experiencing some issues with my website speed. www.scrafted.com
If you click on this link www.scrafted.com/scraftedstore you will see it is loading really really slow compared to the other page. A warrior told me this about it:

What I can see directly when clicking on the link is that there is a jQuery bug too: carouFredSel: No element found for ".tmls_slider, .tmls_slider2".

Do you guys know where i can find, delete or fix this?

Thanks. Any help is highly appreciated!

  • Sorry that you're dealing with slow load times, that's a tough one. I had a look at your site and noticed a few things.

    What's Happening On Your Site
First off, you pointed out the link www.scrafted.com/scraftedstore as being slow. But, for me just about every page other than the front page loads quite slowly. Actually, using Chrome's dev tools, I clocked https://www.scrafted.com/accessories/ at a 24-28 sec TTFB (time to first byte) - which means, the few times that I loaded the page, it took 24 to 28 seconds to get ANY information about the page from your server. I clocked similar (and sometimes slower) TTFB on the page www.scrafted.com/scraftedstore.

So, once my computer requested the page, your server didn't actually send any part of the page to me for almost half a minute. That tells me something - there's something happening on your server that is taking up that time. There's probably some kind of process taking place when the page is requested.

    What's Causing This?
First possible cause - Do you have any kind of caching plugin? A lot of these plugins have functions to minimize javascript and/or css files. These processes usually start the moment that the page is requested - then the process runs on your server - then the page is served to the visitor. This can account for long TTFB times which, in your case, is a huge contributor to your slow load times. This would be my first guess as to what the issue is.

Second possible cause - You have scripts from 28 plugins loaded on the page. That's pretty intense! If the issue is not a caching plugin - chances are VERY high that it has something to do with a plugin or perhaps even a plugin conflict.

How do you fix this? Disable all of your plugins and then load the page - is the problem fixed? If it is fixed, then you know the issue stems from a plugin. Reactivate your plugins one at a time and reload the page after each one, see if the problem comes back. If the problem returns, chances are good that the last plugin that you reactivated is the cause of the issue.

Good tip - disable your cache while your doing this. That way, each page load will be completely fresh. Check out Google Chrome: How to Disable Cache for instructions on how to disable cache while using Chrome.

Third posibility - if it's not a plugin issue, then it's probably a server issue. Try a few things...
    1. Reset your permalink settings - which just means hover over settings, click on Permalinks. Then, on the Permalinks page, you don't even need to make any changes, just click on the save button.
    2. Optimize and repair your database - check out https://premium.wpmudev.org/blog/opt...omplete-guide/ for a ridiculous tutorial on this topic. Be very careful though!
    3. Take a look at your .htaccess file - it's possible that the reason for the long TTFB is because the server is taking the URL that the user types, then redirecting it all over the place based on the settings in your .htaccess file. This may be the explanation for why the home page loads quickly since it's likely not affected by any .htaccess settings

This page, https://www.ostraining.com/blog/coding/find-htaccess/, is a great resource for finding your .htaccess file if you are using cPanel - yout .htaccess file SHOULD look pretty similar to what you see in the WordPress documentation (aka the Codex) - https://codex.wordpress.org/htaccess

I would be surprised if your issue was not fixed once you complete all of these items.

Finally - The jQuery Bug You Mentioned
Also, I investigated the message. It's not a jQuery bug, it's a deliberate warning message that is being sent from the WordPress plugin 'AppZab Live Sales Feed for WooCommerce'.

The problem is that there are two WordPress plugins using the same exact jQuery plugin script - called 'jQuery carouFredSel'. The two WordPress plugins are conflicting with each other. The 'AppZab Live Sales' plugin is attempting to use the 'jQuery carouFredSel' to show lives sales data - I guess. The other WordPress plugin is a testimonial plugin, the only name that I can see is 'tmls_testimonials'. It's attempting to use 'jQuery carouFredSel' to display a carousel of customer testimonials.

The issue is that the 'AppZab' plugin is incorrectly taking the settings of the 'testimonials' plugin and sending the wrong information to the 'jQuery carouFredSel' script. Yes, complicated sounding. But, if you disable one of those plugins, you will probably notice that the warning goes away. However, I don't think that this warning is the root of your issue.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Noah is there a way to give you 10.000 "thank you" at the same time for your post? ehehehh. Thanks a lot! Your help is very appreciated.
I forgot to mention that, yes i do have many plugins installed, but i noticed the speed of the site deacreased when i renamed the woocommerce shop page (before: www.scrafted.com/shop and renamed it to www.scrafted.com/products). Also the live sales plugin was installed just yesterday and i have been having this issue for almost a month now...
I will go through step by step your suggestions and will post a update later on today.

      Thanks a lot Noah!!!
  • You're welcome. If those steps don't knock out the issue, let me know. We might be able to take other steps.

    Noah,

    1. Let me explain what i did. As i told you before i previously renamed the shop page (www.scrafted.com/shop) into www.scrafted.com/products. After i did that it seemed the website slowed down. I could be wrong and this could only be just a personal impression, I don't know if that could be a reason for the ste being so slow, but since you mentioned permalinks i thought this was important to point out.
I didn't like the shop layout of my theme so i am currently using the Essential Grid Plugin to display products as you can see. And if you noticed the pages that are really slow are the one where this plugin is installed: www.scrafted.com/scraftedstore, www.scrafted.com/accessories, www.scrafted.com/bow-ties, www.scrafted.com/art, and so on...
The other pages, www.scrafted.com, scarfted.com/contact-us, www.scrafted.com/about-us and so on, where the essential grid plugin is not installed are loading at a normal speed.

I deactivated all plugins (exept visual composer, woocommerce and the essetial grid plugin because i need these) but still www.scrafted.com/scraftedstore (and related pages such as www.scrafted.com(accessories for ex.) took about 32 secs to load compared to other pages such as the "home page" or the "about" page that took 7 secs approx. (i used the pingdom tool to measure the speed). I contacted the themepunch plugin ( authors of the ess grid plugin) and they had a look and told me that the ess grid is not the problem and replied to me:

You have a lot not available / blocked content on the page which creates huge delay as shown here:

    2016-03-21_1650 - ThemePunch-Support's library

Also, you have amazing amount of jQuery libraries / plugins which loading in a row and not parallel.

I would suggest to contact some Freelancer who can help you to go through your scripts, markup and eliminate unavailable content, fonts, images, scripts, and help you to minimize scripts and load them async. There are surely space to get a much much better performance out of your site.

As best open the Network Monitor in your Google Chrome, reload your page and you will see all the content which is not performance loaded, so you can go through and eliminate / fix them one by one.

    Thank you very much,

    ThemePunch

I called godaddy also which told me everything looks fine ( i have a 2gb Ultimate hosting with them and all the bars are on green) exept they told me i have many images and they are pretty heavy but i already compressed them using a plugin called "EWWW Image Optimizer" but no improvement.

I used to have cache plugins installed but they were creating conflicts (layout issues) so i m not using them anymore. I also installed Lazy Load plugin but seemed not to have improved page speed.

As you suggested i saved the permalinks settings again but no luck.

Regarding these 2 alternatives to fix the issues

Optimize and repair your database - check out https://premium.wpmudev.org/blog/opt...omplete-guide/ for a ridiculous tutorial on this topic. Be very careful though!

I have red the articles but i am not that much of a techie to get so deep into the issue and i m scared i could mess things up badly.

As i told you the appzap live sales plugin was installed just yesterday or 2 days ago and i have been experiencing this issues for over a month now. I also deactivated all the plugins, exept the ones i mentioned above, but still, scrafted.com/scraftedstore is really slow even with 3/4 plugins installed.

Do you have any other suggestions? I am getting quite some nice traffic 40 to 50 visits per day (site is 1 month old) and started to run some fb ads just yesterday which i stopped today because people were getting frustrated due to the site speed and were leaving, so is not worth it ro run ads at this particular moment untill i fix this issue.

I am getting a little frustrated over this because i think am loosing customers.

Also want to say that i know you have spent quite some time and if i can repay the favor back just send me a pm (i am a newbie and don't know how can i help, but just tell me if you need anything)

    Thanks a lot Noah!

I would like to add a short note on this. I have noticed (It happens rarely) i click on a link but i would be redirected to a completely different link!!!

This could be also the issue...
    • Was there anything else that changed? When you changed the URL, did you also intall the 'Essential Grid Plugin' at the same time? I wouldn't think that simply renaming the page would make much of a difference, especially since you mention later in your post that you reset the permalinks to no success.

It's possible that we've hit the nail on the head with this one. My best bet is now on this 'Essential Grid Plugin' being the issue. Perhaps it's not this plugin directly causing your slow page loads, but maybe it is conflicting with another plugin or your theme which is, in turn, causing the problem. So what I mean is that maybe there's nothing wrong with the plugin at all, but it still may be causing issues with your specific setup.

I know it's inconvenient, but disabling ALL plugins is really the only way to see if a plugin is the problem. PLUS, since you just stated that you have suspicions that the 'Essential Grid Plugin' may be involved in the issue, it really is critical that you disable that plugin and then check the load times of your pages. If the load time issue disappears when you disable that specific plugin, then we know where the issue is coming from. Then, we can perhaps work to resolve it if needed.

And don't worry, plugins will retain their settings when you reactivate them. Turning them off momentarily will probably make your site less usable - but, you can turn them all off and check your page load times in a matter of minutes - then just turn the plugins back on and your back to where you were. Having a few minutes where your site isn't really working is better than straggling along with a site that is basically unusable because of slow load times.

Yup, they are mostly correct, you do have a lot of issues on the site. Content/resources not loading correctly is not a good thing, but that's not what is causing this big slow loading issue. I performed many of the same tests that they did (I even used Google Chrome's Network Monitor, and I see they suggested that tool) and most of the 'not available / blocked content' that is on the slow pages is also on your homepage which loads much faster - so that's not the issue.

They do mention the large number of scripts that are being loaded, just as I did. You really should take some time to permanently deactivate and remove the WordPress plugins that you don't really need. I have a feeling that there are many WordPress plugins active on your site (and therefore, loading scripts) that you aren't really using. However, most of those scripts are used on the super slow pages AND on the faster loading pages. So, even though there is room for you to optimize in this area, the NUMBER of scripts isn't necessarily the big issue here.

If the 'EWWW Image Optimizer' did not help you out, you should disable and remove it. Same with any plugins that you are not specifically using.

Be sure to disable and remove that Lazy Load plugin then. Also, remove any caching plugins that you are no longer using. Don't let them just sit there inactive if you're never going to use them again.

Dang, that's too bad because that can be a really easy fix for a lot of issues.

I can understand your feelings on this. I can understand you not wanting to mess things up. Perhaps you can contact your webhost (GoDaddy, right?) and ask them to optimize/repair your WordPress database. They would probably do it for you and report back when they're done. You could probably also ask them to send you a copy of the contents of your .htaccess file if you ask nicely - or maybe they could, at least, send you a tutorial specific to GoDaddy that would show you how you can do it.

When I brought up the 'Appzap' plugin, I didn't mean that I thought it was the cause of your slow page loads. I just wanted to point out for you what the whole message was about. Like I mentioned in my first post, I don't think that's the cause of your slow page loads.

      Yes, I do...
      • Disable ALL of your plugins this time - specifically make sure that you disable the 'Essential Grid' plugin and see if the load times speed up. If they do speed up, then try turning back on ALL of your plugins EXCEPT the 'Essential Grid' plugin and try to load the page again. If the page loads faster at that point, then you will know that the 'Essential Grid' plugin has SOMETHING to do with this issue.
      • Temporarily reset your site to a default theme - this is a debugging strategy that can really work wonders. All you need to do is switch your theme back to one of the themes that is loaded by default in WordPress - like the 'Twenty Sixteen' or 'Twenty Fifteen' theme. You don't need to leave it on that theme, just change back to a default theme then go reload the slow pages to see if it fixes the issue. Then, you can switch right back to the theme that you were using. All of the theme's settings should still be there when you turn it back on! Take note of any changes in page load times when you are using a default theme.
      • Contact GoDaddy (that's your host, right?) and ask them to do those tasks that I mentioned. Ask if they will optimize/repair the database that you are using for your WordPress site. Also ask them if they can send you the contents of your .htaccess file so we can take a look at it and see if it's causing an issue.

Unfortunately, you are probably right about losing customers. Slow page loads are a big reason that visitors turn away from your site - this is especially true if your TTFB is over just a few seconds.

And, you're quite welcome. I really enjoy trouble shooting WordPress issues. Thank you for being appreciative of my assistance!

around 6/7 secs, need to improve it but not like the shop page

  • Looks much better! Glad that you found the issue.

What was probably happening is that the Essential Grid plugin was making a bunch of calls to your database to put together a list of products - when the page was requested by a user, this plugin was was probably dong a whole bunch of operations on your server before sending anything back to the user. That's why you had such a long TTFB.

Now, since the plugin is caching itself, it is only running those operations maybe once per so many hours. In between times, it will just use a cached version of the last time that it made all those calls to the database. So, no matter how many times a user (of different users) request the page, it will just serve them the cached version, which will be much faster!

Noah, while is loading so much faster www.scrafted.com/scraftedstore i don't understand why on some pages (where i am using the grid to display the products) the products are gone after activating that global cache option in the plugin setting...
    For example:

    https://www.scrafted.com/stationary/
    https://www.scrafted.com/toys/

Products are gone on this 2 pages

    while for ex here:

    https://www.scrafted.com/scraftedstore/

the grid is showing the products like always.

I havent changed anything to the plugin settings exept activating the global cache option...

If i deactivate that global cache option then all pages will show products normally!

Also the LOAD MORE button is not working on this page www.scrafted.com/scraftedstore

Do you have some ideas on why this is happening?

    Thanks
    • [1] reply

    • Honestly, I can't be too sure why this is happening. But, it certainly seems like it has something to do with the caching option of the 'Essential Grid' plugin. I would bet dollars to pesos that there are a few things conflicting on your server.

Caching can cause a lot of conflicts - which is why, for instance, the WP Total Cache plugin (which is an insanely great plugin, by the way) is often the first thing I tell people to disable when they're troubleshooting WordPress issues.

In your case, because you have SO MANY plugins, there's a really good chance that the caching option in the 'Essential Grid' plugin is conflicting with something else.

What would I do if I were you?? More troubleshooting

I would disable ALL of my plugins except the 'Essential Grid' plugin. Make sure that you leave the global caching option on. After you disable all of your other plugins, check to see if the 'Essential Grid' plugin has an option to 'Clear the Cache' or 'Delete the Cache', some kind of option to get rid of what you have cached and start over again.

After you clear the cache (if you are able to), go back and see if those pages are now displaying items correctly. If they are, then you have another WordPress plugin that is conflicting with your caching option.

Again, you're going to have to make some choices. I would narrow down your list of plugins to the absolute minimum of what you actually need. Only keep the ones that you are DIRECTLY using. Then, if you find that a plugin that you NEED to have is conflicting with the 'Essential Grid' plugin, think about contacting the authors of the plugins and letting them know about the conflict.

When a customer of mine tells me that one of my plugins is conflicting with another, I always fix it for them (if I'm able to). Most of the time, as in 95% of the time, it's the fault of the other plugin (hey, no one's perfect 100% of the time, sometimes it's my fault), but I'll usually still find a way to fix it.
