Wordpress newbie needs assistance

I managed to learn the basics of Wordpress and created a couple of simple sites.

I now (for me) am trying to build a slightly more advanced site, but am having problems. I am using Atomic theme 2 obtained from the WarRoom.

I want the home page to stay static with an unsummarized welcome post and sign up form.

I also want to create a number of pages on different topics with the related posts showing up as summaries (not the full article) on those pages only. (Not sure if I have explained that correctly). E.G. a health page on which one will only find health related articles and a first aid page on which one will only find first aid related articles.

I have asked questions elsewhere and have followed various suggestions, but have not managed to get it right yet.

  • Hi, Sandy. You'll want to set up each topic as a category and assign each post to the appropriate category or categories.

    For your home page create a page rather than a post, go to the Reading Settings page under administrative settings, and select that page as the static front page.

    For the excerpt effect, you can either insert the <!--more--> tag after the first couple of paragraphs of each post, or you can write what WordPress calls a "hand-crafted excerpt" and place it in the Excerpt box on the Edit Post page.

      Thanks for the response. I understand the bit about assigning each post to a category and can do that. Is it not possible to assign posts to a specific page in much the way that it is done with a normal static site?

      Thanks for the info re the <!--more--> tag. These things are so simple when you know how .

      I have a lot of learning to do I guess.

      It seems your "recipe lady" wanted to do exactly what I was hoping to do.
      Maybe someday someone will create a plug-in that will help us do it, but meanwhile, I will follow your advice.

      But grandma's purse is empty at the moment. I will make do with what I have until I have earned something to spend.

  • check with few themes in themes sites , normally magazine themes will come with such options like bunch of categories in minimized format in home page with custom settings
