WordPress Spam problem

My WordPress blog is getting mercilessly hacked by spammer--I mean I sometimes get upwards of 30 spam messages per hour. I got some bad advise from my former webmaster who told me NOT to upgrade WP, so I have version 3.1.1 which I suspect may be my problem. But I won't let me upgrade to 4.7.2, I get error message DL failed and installation failed, error code 14090086SSL, whatever that means. So I'm at wits end, don't know how to stop it short of taking blog completely offline and starting over which I really don't want to do. Tried logging onto WP help or forums, no dice. Anybody have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks.

  • You should install akismet plugin to block spam
  • Are those spam comments or emails? How did you try to upgrade WP? There should be a simple migration path.
