Do I need to Point server to live domain and dev.domain for my software?

Hi everyone here, I want to host my software on Google cloud hosting.
Do I need to point the server to live domain say [kob.com] and [dev.kob.com]?
Please help to guide me concerning this issue?

    Depends on what you're wanting to do. Do you want to set up development or staging environment for your site with dev.kob.com?

    Hi, thank you for your reply. I don't have much experience with it, but according to the information I read, it says it good to point server to the domain and also to dev. domain. But I don't really know if the dev. domain is for testing.
