trace a connection

Before Vista I told surfers how to trace their links with this guide:
Click on Start >>> then Run >>>
then type in: cmd >>>
then type in: tracert "spinasilverdollar.com"
replacing spinasilverdollar.com with YOUR domain name.

In the last nine days my DNS for talewins has not propogated here so I can upload my files.

HOW do I perform this same tracer in Vista?

  • You do it the same way.
    in the command prompt type: tracert <domain.com>
  • Pretty much everything in the command line interface is the same between XP and Vista, so what you used to do in one you should be able to do exactly the same things with the same commands. In fact you can check out this web site Command-line reference A-Z for a full list of commands.

    • Thank you. I am stupid and have no idea in the world how to get to RUN in Vista.

      However, I called my DSL supplier and asked him to trace this for me. It turned out that HE was the bottleneck.
  • The easiest way to get the run command in Vista is to press the Windows key (the flag key on the lower left of most standard keyboards) + R. In the event that you do not have a Windows key on your keyboard, see this website (Featured Windows Download: Vista Start Menu for XP with ViStart) for a picture of its standard location. I know this is a skin for XP, but that's still the same location for the run command in Vista.

    • You can also add it to the start bar in Vista by clicking on:

      Start>>Right-Click a blank area in the start bar(next to your photo is a good spot) >> Properties>> Start Menu Tab>> Click the 'Customize' Button>> Scroll Down to 'Run Command'>> Click the Check Box Next to it>> Click OK>> Click Apply>> Click OK.

      Pull up the start bar and it should have the run command now!
