Hello,

I'm just wondering if somebody can give me directions as to how to upload an MP3 to my server. I know how to upload pdf and html and know it is similar, but still cannot get it to work. I have Hostgator as host provider, and intend to upload this MP3 that I'm selling to a subdomain I've created where clients can access/download it from there after purchase.

Can you please help?
Thanks much!!

    Hi Tammy

There is really nothing different about uploading an MP3 than any other type of file - it's just another form of binary file.

If you are using an FTP program such as Filezilla or Win SCP it should automatically go into binary mode. With other FTP programs you may need to select binary mode to do the file transfer.

One note - if you are selling the MP3 then just putting it in a sub-directory offers no protection from people discovering the file or sharing the link with their friends. At the very least you should name the directory something that isn't obvious and use your robots.txt file to keep it from being indexed by search engines.

A better method would be to use a service like e-junkie to hold and distribute the file. They are inexpensive (look on Google for a coupon, you can usually get a month or two free) , they integrate easily with PayPal and other payment processors and they provide your customers with a temporary link (that they can't share) to download their files.

    Hope this helps

Thanks Bill, for your suggestions. I was trying to prevent yet another monthly fee through ejunkie. I know it is just $5, but I already have two hosting accounts and there is no need to incur in more monthly fees -if I can help it :-)

What I want is to create a paying button through Paypal directly and direct people to a download page just as you suggested, with a string of letters and numbers that are not easy to 'discover' and also using the no-follow for the robots.
