How can wifi connect when wired cannot?

Anyone had this connection problem?

My WindowsXP desktop computer has a Belkin router which connects via a Comcast modem to the net. All physical wiring.

The computer is newly refusing to connect to the Internet, or when it does the connection is sporadic.

However, my laptop with wifi is connecting to the net without a problem.

How can a laptop wirelessly connect to the net when the desktop computer with the actual wired connection cannot?

You could try plugging the desktop machine directly into the Comcast modem, without the router in the way. Of course during this test your laptop would have no access. If the desktop works, then you'd know that the router correctly forwards the modem signal via Wifi, but its hardwired ports don't work. You'd then know to adjust the router's setup. If the desktop still works intermittently, then your problem must be in the way XP is set up on the desktop machine.

Those belkin Routers, have some weird issues, I had to go into the router control panel and reset it to get my aunts to work again.

I'll ask the obvious, are you sure your Ethernet cable is good and is securely connected - have you tried a different cable to make sure?

Is there a light corresponding to the port you have your computer connected to that indicates your connection is being made? How about on your XP box, does its network port have an indicator light and is it illuminated when you connect the RJ45 connector to it? And have you tried a different port on your router?

Have you tried connecting your laptop to the same cable, turning of its wireless connection and just using the wired one? If that works you may have a bad NIC on your desktop computer.

Between having two computers available to you and the possibility of directly connecting to the modem you should be able to quickly troubleshoot this one.

    Good luck!

Are you sure your laptop is connecting to your Belkin router and not to your next door neighbor's wifi?

Check if the wires are properly attached to your pc.
If it does, maybe the problem is in the router.

    Hi!

If all of the above fails and it's not your router, it could be your ethernet card. Make sure that you have the correct ethernet card driver properly installed.

    Hope that helps
