Computer Crash Need a little help

I need a little computer advice. I have a dell 2400 that is seven years old, but was running perfectly until the other day. My wife wanted some store coupons, so I downloaded a program to get them, and my computer went to a white screen.

I rebooted, and all seemed ok. I left it running, and the next morning I had a blue screen, with a message that said something like"my computer had been stopped to prevent further damage. I could not get into safe mode, or do anything, so I gave it to a friend who is pretty good with this stuff.

He said I had a Trojan, and two viruses, and he had to overwrite my windows xp program, but I did not lose any of my files, which made me happy. Everything seems to be ok now, except for one thing.

Windows explorer will not work. When I try to use it, it will launch the browser, and then a message comes up saying there was a problem, and asks if I would like to notify Microsoft.

I have tried everything I know of. It is IE8. I was going to delete it, and download it again, but I was told it is intergrated into the windows program, and that won't work. Is that true.

I use firefox for almost everything, but I make a lot of niche websites, and I need explorer, to see how the sites look in that browser.

I know I can delete everything on my hard drive, and reload the operating system, but I am trying to save all the programs I have collected over the years. I have everything backed up, but there are some things you just can't back up.

I ran spybot, and it did not find anything.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks Glenn

did you try a system restore to back before the virus etc? Also, be careful on those store coupons etc, those always make me a bit crazy.

As an interim solution, you could try Check Browser Compatibility, Cross Platform Browser Test - Browsershots to test how your sites look in various browsers.

Also, sometimes when IE crashes and wants to send a report to microsoft, there is a details area you can click on and sometimes you can do a google search on that information and find a solution that way.

You could try running superantispyware free edition and malwarebytes anti-malware to see if they can clean stuff up.

Do you happen to know what site she downloaded the coupon software from? I'm just curious because I print coupons from the net all the time and have for years - not once have I been hit with a virus or trojan from them.

I want to be sure to avoid whatever site your wife was using.

You can try downloading it from here:

Download details: Windows Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP

Unlike other web browsers Internet Explorer shares DLL's with your Windows XP operating system, so simply reinstalling it may not fix the problem.

You may have to back up all your user data, make sure you have install CD's or files for your software and then use your Install DVD to wipe your hard disk and reinstall Windows. IE8 not working might just be one symptom of a much bigger problem.

Incidents like this make a strong case for buying one of those terabyte external drives and doing a complete image backup with Norton Ghost or something similar.

    Best of luck

after you have cleaned down the machine (eset have an online scanner as well thats worth using) you may want to re-apply the latest service pack to the machine then get the latest updates.

Also goto your start menu -> run and type --> msconfig
Then check in your 'startup' tab and services tab to ensure that nothing is running when you reboot.

IE8 absolutely CAN be uninstalled if it was installed as an upgrade. How do I uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 8?

Save your data and do a clean install of XP. I try and do it every six months, it get filled with junk fairly easily.
