Butterfly Marketing Software Open Source - Why Do I Need It?

Mike Filsaime sent me and many others an email giving away Butterfly Marketing Software Open Source.

I wasn't familiar with it when it was released, so my question is why do I need it? What can it do?

  • Personally I don't know why YOU would need it.
    As for what it can do, well it is a great platform for launching a membership site.
    It is free so why not download it and give it a try.

      That's why I asked the question, and it was also a hint to other Warriors that it is available for them to get it.

      BUT, thankfully for the Warriors that posted a different message it comes with a warning.

  • The open source offer that Mike just released looks like a good deal on the surface but I would caution everyone to be careful with it. I just looked it over and it does have conflicting terms and conditions.

    On his pages Mike says you can modify the script and then you have PLR and can sell it as your own product as long as you sell it over his suggested price point, but when you read the GPL license it clearly states that any work that is derived from the BFM source must be given away freely since the code as a whole is covered under the GPL license.

    Mike also states you can't give the script way as you do not have giveaway rights to it, but the GPL conflicts with that as well since the GPL gives you clear rights to give the script away in its current condition.

    • Mike Ambrosio is taking care of the TOS in the GPL for us. My text TOS you read after that supersedes that.

      I will have the GPL text updated later today to reflect that you can sell it when you modify it as I state in the download area section and text.

      Sorry for the confusion.

      There is no cacth - Change any code and it is yours to PLR and keep all the profits. No strings.

      I am pretty loose with this. I am moving on.

      Let's see good things come from the code base

    • He has told it for 1k, sold it for 197/97, given it away if you sign up for a continuity and used it for bonuses.

      My bet is sales are slow for it.

      So give it away and have a $200 OTO. He isnt giving it away because his business is changing. He is to get OTO sales and list building.

      If it was any other reason and wanted it to be true open source, he would have it on source forge so people can share ideas w/out paying.

      Might be a good time for someone to open a forum.

      As already pointed out, the license is contradictory. Its more like a common license.

    What will happen now to the people who paid for this product in full ($2K) just like me? Will your team still support it as promised on your sales page?

    I know you have an upsell of $200 just to access to the developers community. Does paying customers like me needs this?

  • I bought it the day it launched in January 2006 and still use it to this day. My latest site (in my sig) is built around it. If you want to start a custom membership site then I would highly recommend it, its probably the best purchase I ever made.

    For me I can say BFM script is very good. It has had it's problems, but I paid well over 1k for it and use it on a number of sites.

    I find it good as a list builder, ie give away an audio/ebook and then present an oto. It does not have drip feed built into it, ie a new product appear after every x weeks, however it is good, and being free it's even better.

    I remember first reading about bfm when it launched and it was then that i discovered the arena of IM and launches.

    However i suppose the question remains re the licence, changing the script and reselling it - how much change needs to be done, ie if i change one line of code is that enough?

  • If you want to use the software this is a good plan. If not I don't find much value in it. I highly doubt I am going to develop the software

    • I am looking to build a membership site and was offered this script in an e-mail from Mike the other day. I currently have my domain name, my host and my content. Other than this script what else would I need in order to get my membership site up and running.

  • I think basically its for selling products when you want to have an integrated members-only area. It's a new form of viral marketing, and the software is actually pretty good. Heck, there's no reason NOT to grab it because now it is free

  • Butterfly marketing script is everything you need for your site. It can be for building list, sell products, memberships, etc. Its really good, everything in other script can do is in butterfly marketing. The best script I ever use!
  • Based on what I've read, I have an understanding of what the BFM software does. However, not having had any actual first-hand experience in setting up sites or anything else related to internet marketing, is this something I could do on my own, or does it make more sense to get the study course that goes with it? A great tool isn't of value unless you know how to use it.

    If I don't get the study course, what are my other options for learning how to take advantage of it? If I do get the study course, do I have better options for getting it other than joining the developer community for $200?

    One last thing. Reading the reviews for BFM, it seems like the software debuted in 2005. Is it still relevant today, is it still a big deal taking into consideration other tools that have probably launched since then?

    Listen, you're putting lots of time and energy into your site. Freakin build it on a sustainable platform.

    BFM is outdated, and obviously Mike as abandoned development on it.

    I paid for it. Then abandoned it for better platforms. I highly doubt it's got any better since I shelled out the cash for it.

    Don't be stupid here...

    Mike is just trying to get the most mileage out of his decaying, outdated assets. Watch the latest offers he's made. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to he's more concerned about squeezing the last dime out of them while they die, then actually delivering for those who buy them.

    Anyone who buys them is buying dead or decaying assets.

    BFM might be free, but it will cost you far more in the end.

    Build on a wordpress platform with a membership script like Amember or Wishlist.

    With the plugins you'll have all the functionality of BFM and MORE... And it will be sustainable.

    Wordpress isn't going away anytime soon.

  • I installed the Butterfly Marketing script as showed in their tutorial videos and all went well. Then when I tried to login to my admin panel it loaded something but ended up at the same login page. I reuploaded and reinstalled a few times but still doesn't work.

    Any idea what might cause this and is the open source version working for you others?

    • If I remember correctly with GPL you can't resell
      but if BFM would be released under LGPL then you could resell.

    A good open source community has a few paid workers who keep the project on task. I've never seen one where I have to pay to contribute to the code. That's just nonsense.

    And my 2 cents makes it equal 6 cents.

  • I have one question that nobody has answered yet. Is it possible to modify the code to work with PHP 5.4 and beyond? I currently have it installed in hosting that has upgraded to 5.4 and I am afraid that if I change it back to 5.2 some of my other sites will fail to operate. The following error is displayed from the Admin Area General Settings:

    PHP Version Check - FAILED

    PHP 5.0 through 5.2.x is required to run this software.
    Your version is 5.4.34, which requires a change.
    Please ask your hosting company to change your version.

    Since this script is installed in the root directory of my main domain how would I change the PHP version so it would affect only this site?

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      I have 2 BFM sites that run perfectly under php version 5.2.13 for years, Almost 12,000 members.

      I have a VPS and for the past several months i was killing apache at least once a week I think they mention that my server was end of life or something like that....

      Anyway, they offer me a great deal on a new VPS plan and they migrated all my sites to this new server.

      Now this server is running php version 5.4.41

      That where my problem begin

      from the Admin Area General Settings I don't see the php error you mention.

      For me right now my admin panel is working, peoples can login and navigate the site. I don't get any errors from my admin panel.

      My problem is that nobody can signup anymore

      When peoples try to join my sites and fill up the form they only see...

      (((Please wait while your information is being processed ...)))

      You wait and wait and nothing happen...??????

      Honestly I have no clue what to do now.

      Any BFM expert here?

      I already ask my hosting company if they could downgrade me to php 5.2.x and they say that this version is not supported for several years now. I think they offer me to go back to php 5.3.21.

      Anyways, I mention that I run 2 BFM sites, well one of them need a good update, so I put it in maintenance mode a couple months ago, this sites was running a old version of the BFM script, version 1.9.03.

      My other BFM site is running version 2.10 of the script.

      To make a story short, I decided that I will upgrade my old site from 1.9.03 to the latest version which is 2.32 and see what will happen. The very first patches that I installed version 1.9.04 I got a error right away.

      On this new server I'm running MySQL Version 5.6.23 on my old server I was running Version 5.0.29
      So I guess the syntax is not the same????

      Finally I kind of broke my site when I install the patches, now I get a error message when I'm in my admin panel, don't see any of my stats anymore

      So for sure will not try to install any patches on my good BFM site.

      But for now it is pretty worthless to have a site that nobody can't signup.

      Not sure what I gonna do with that.

      Any expert with this script that are still reading this thread? (Pretty old thread) Got here by googling butterfly marketing script.

      PS. BTW, I paid $1000 for this script, made my money back many time but still suck that the support forum is DEAD. Well any support altogether.

  • I have to say that this is one of the exceptional products that is still valuable, I actually have both versions, the paid and the open source, (still have the original butterfly marketing course and paper copy) so often you see sellers (very often right here in the WSO forum) where they sell a product sometimes support it for a few weeks, (sometimes not) but it has become a normal course of action where a product is sold then abandoned once the revenue drops below a certain threshold.

    Often the website shows up as expired, seen this in several products recently.

    But butterfly marketing, its still online, the forum is still up, I think that says a lot about the veracity of the seller.

    Of course nothing lasts forever, but you have to respect a seller that stands behind and keeps a website open even when it is not as popular or continues to generate income.
