How to fix a "www" vs "no www" problem?

Ok here's my scenario... I've decided to give hostgator another go. So today I moved one of my websites over to my new dedicated server there. Now when I put in www.myurl.com - it points to the new dedicated server just fine. However, if I leave out the www and just put in myurl.com, it points back to my old server.

Anyone know what I might be doing wrong?

  • That would be a DNS issue. With any DNS changes, it can take up to 72 hours to take effect for everybody.. so it may just be a temporary side effect of the move.

It could, however, be a missing piece in the DNS records for your domain. If you'd like, you could PM your actual domain to me and I'll take a quick look to see what's up.

  • Hi,

It's an A-Record issue. Wherever your domain is registered there will be a-records. There are usually at least 2. One is for the "www" and one for accessing your site with just http://yourdomain.com. It sounds like only the "www" a-record has been updated to reflect your new IP address.

Check your control panel for a-records and update your second "http:" one to be the same as your "www". If you cant access it, contact your support people.

Just an idea too - It's always best to keep your domains registered separately from your hosting. That way if you want to switch hosts you can do so without having the hassle of moving your domain.

Plus domain registrars rarely if ever fail, hosts go down all the time. So if you have your domain registered elsewhere its a simple job to point it to a backup host. I recommend Netfirms. Their support is excellent and they have free whois privacy. It's also really easy to change IP addresses on their control panel and I've found propogation can take 15 minutes when moving hosts.

    Cheers
