Moving WP Blog To Another Domain

Hi everybody,

I have a wordpress blog that I created a few months ago. Problem
is that I disovered a better domain that would match perfectly
to this blog.

Can I move the blog from one domain to another? I am using
thesis theme and I worked like crazy on this... I don't want
to do it all over.

Is there a way to move the blog to another domain?

Thanks in advance and all the best

You don't need to move your blog - you need to point the new domain to the existing blog. If your current blog is on a web hosting server (not on wordpress.com), all you need to do is this:

1: point the new domain to the existing hosting site's nameservers.
2: make an entry at your web host pointing the domain name to the folder where your blog is... ex: on HostMonster, it's called an "add-on domain".
3: Test it to make sure the blog comes up when you enter the new domain name (can take up to a day to propagate) -- at this point, it will "bounce" to the old domain name if you click anything.
4: In the WordPress admin, go into general settings and set the wordpress blog url and site url to your new domain name.
5: If the old site was indexed, set up a 301 Redirect from the old domain to the new domain.

    That should do it.

    Hope this helps.

Yes you can move a blog to another domain. You can copy all the files to the new domain and then set the new url in admin.

Yes, you can move the blog completely to another domain. In fact, I have done so many blog migration and moving in the past 6 months. All you need to do is:

    1) backup all database, plugins, themes and uploads
    2) use any textpad to open the database file and rename to new blog url
    3) install new blog in new domain
    4) upload all themes, plugins and uploads
    5) import database into new blog via cPanel
    6) check your sites and boom!

    That's all you need!

This steps I list out above seems like quite easy to do but you require some knowledge in database and blog setup.

I suggest you hire someone who is good at blog transfer for you if you are not confident to handle it. If you need help from me, do let me know.

    Thanks,

neverknow has outlined the correct procedure. The biggest issue is that WP 'hardcodes' image and media URLs within posts. As long as your original blog is up and serving, you'll be able to see images and media in the NEW blog. Once you take your old one down, though, the links (obviously) will break and all your media will disappear.

It isn't an easy 15 minute job, and if you tackle it yourself it's likely you'll screw something up the first time or two around. BE SURE YOU HAVE BACKUPS

An example: you find an entry in the database that looks sort of like this: a:1{s:30:http:// old-domain.com/link.jpg} and you change the domain to http:// new-domain.com/link.jpg. The change you made will break your blog because you've just destroyed a serialized entry ( the new address had 31 characters instead of 30 ).

BUT - persevere, take your time, and you'll get it.

How on earth did you know that I had exactly that issue today when I was migrating a blog for a client? Thanks a lot!
