Hi Folks

It appears that my registry has become corrupted.

Very slow. Windows vista system.

Now my question;

Are registry cleaners ok and if so which ones do you recommend?

I do not have the experience to go straight into the registry.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • I had some bad experiences with some freeware Registry cleaners. They cleaned so "well" that my system didn't start-up.

    How do you know it's a registry problem?

    I suggest you to take a look, with Task Manager, what process eats the most from your processor.
    Also, try a program like Starter, to remove any unwanted program from start-up. Then reboot the system and see if the performance improves.

    I would recommend strongly NOT to use the inbuilt registry editor of Vista for cleaning your registry. I obviously don;t know your programming skills but even if you deleted one critical registry key by error then it might cause irreversible damage to your system.

    You can download the trial version of registry fix (Fully functional) at Registryfix.com (Non affiliate link). I guess it will work good for 30 days or so.

    Also you must also take a look at task manager and see if any process or background program is eating your memory unnecessarily. Registry fix also has a start up program manager where you can select which programs you want running at startup. Make sure you close any unnecessary program to load at startup using the advanced feature.

    the following might help:
    1) Get a good updated anti virus to scan your system.I recommend mcafee.
    2) Minimise the no of programs you run on your system at once e.g no of webpage opened.
    3)Get a good registry cleaner to scan your system without fixing it at first so u could have idea of all the issues on your system.You may use a good free one i recommend ccleaner.search for it on google , or you can use a paid one.I recommend regcure or registry easy.Note that a good registry cleaner will have backup feature incase anything goes wrong.

    Try all these and lets know if u have headway.

    is very good at identifying problem registry entries/ processes.

    However, there are other things to consider:
    Have you defragged your HD.
    How much free space does your HD have (and what percentage of total)
    How much RAM, and how much Virtual memory
    Was this a gradual or sudden problem?
    What is the name of the process consuming the most RAM in task manager?

  • You need multiple hard drives on your box setup as RAID 1 or RAID 5 so you can get immediate restoration of your data or at least an immediate copy of it (mirror). I would recommend getting at least three identical hard drives, same manufacturer and specs, and installing a reliable RAID controller. I think Dell has started to sell this as a default option on desktop computers, but they call it something different like Dell Datasafe or some other marketing term.

    Another idea is to get a USB drive from Maxtor or Western Digital and backup your important files each day. I carry a USB thumb drive with me for this very purpose. Then just work from copies of the original files.

    Another idea is to use the Yahoo briefcase or Gmail storage since they give you 1GB or more these days. If you are worried about privacy, then zip up your files and encrypt with GNU privacy guard or TrueCrypt or PGP. Lot's of options here, but you have to plan ahead, and setup everything before disaster happens.

      My drive is a western digital so I do not think I will be using them again!

      I thought that my most important files were backed up. Too easy to let backups slip behind schedule.

      Unfortunately cost is a major concern for your first bit of advice.

      With reference to gmail storage 1Gb is not a lot of storage space for modern drives.

  • No matter your windows system is XP or Vista, the easiest way to speed up your PC is have a tuneup360 in it; you can try the software "tuneup360". My friends and I all use it, it's seems really useful.

      Same happend to me over 4 years ago ...




      Western Digital Hard Drives have one of the highest fail rates.
      They really are pieces of digital turd.

      The attraction to them is that they're really cheap short term ... but they'll cost you more time, effort and headaches when they fail in the future (not "IF" ... But when).

      Seagate are good ... but basically anything other than WD.

      I've worked IT support for many years. Once you start messing with Registry's things are only going to go down hill. Unless your ready to spend hours and hours on this, you should back everything up and reimage.

      I know it sounds like the easy way out, but really...unless your an expert, leave the registry alone.

      Need proof? Head to your closest computer repair shop, pay $80, and watch them call you and tell you that you need a reimage.

      You should also upgrade to windows 7 ASAP. It's much better than vista.

      Now that I have said my peace, if you want to go down this road, try using the microsoft repair tool first:
