Joomla Noob

Hey all, Though I frequently program in php I am new to the whole joomla CMS. I could really use a guided tour or any help on trying to get this project off of the ground.

I am looking for assistance on choosing/creating joomla templates, working with the admin area of the site as well as dealing with components and extensions.

I am trying to put together a services directory listing area(paid/exchange). Anyones help would be greatly appreciated. Please send me a pm if you have the time to run me through all of that.

    For that kind of site the most important decision is the component used.
    A component is like a sub-site within joomla, which exports functionality and displays it's things in the content area of the current template.
    The main components for this kid of work would be:
    • Mosets Tree
    • Sobi2 component
    • K2- e great FREE content component that offers so many options and with super flexible templating
    As far as learning Joomla is concerned, I'd recommend a book if you want to seriously get into it, or simply browse the existing documentation and forums.

    There are also some paid programs to teach everything, but I don't know about your budget.

    As a personal opinion: I got burned with joomla and am very suspicious about using it for new projects. I try to go with either Wordpress for content sites, or just program everything with some php frameworks out there. Joomla tends to get super-complicated when you have SEF Url's, and any component getting a bit larger or more useful is to be bought...

      There is a guy here who goes by the name of helpandinfo, who knows Joomla pretty well. He has a WSO which is for Newbies really, but it comes with a lot of videos which take you through the Joomla set up, themes, extensions, plugins, the admin area, the whole thing.

      I bought it for the Joomla info, and it was very good.

      Those are some good components to use. How in the heck did you "get burned with joomla" ??? Joomla can't burn you, only the user can burn themselves LOL

      I would recommend not trying to learn joomla yourself unless you learn fast. It has a steep learning curve.

      Joomla is actually very easy to use once you know how it works. It's also great for SEF urls and on-site SEO - but again if you know what you are doing. All I can say is good luck.

      In case you NEED 1-on-1 training, I can teach you the bare bones version from a programmer's point of view so you can skip all the crap you don't need to know and I would relate things to how they work from the code side of things as opposed to the user interface. Let me know and I can do 1-on-1 training for $20/hr.

    I have been a Joomla guy for over a year now. It is truly a great tool. I always recommend people start with visual tutorials, those work great for most people. I just recently found these video tutorials here (notice multiple Joomla categories):

    You should also search on Youtube.
